The whole World should be thankful to Greta Thunberg for bringing attention to the Climate Change danger through #fridaysforfuture strikes that she is leading. They are indeed bringing much-needed attention to the PROBLEM.
My question is – what is the SOLUTION?
It is fine for students and adults across the world to come together on to the streets, to show how much they desire to protect the Earth and aggressively question the World elders about why they are allowing children’s futures to be looted.
Most of the leaders that they are questioning are democratically elected. They are representatives of the people. They are expected to do what the people tell them to do. When you are questioning them – you are questioning yourself.
The real cause of climate change is excessive consumerism. To pull back our world from tipping over, we will need to drastically curtail our consumption. Can we the people – do that? Curtail consumption !! Can we give up our air conditioners, travel, fancy branded accessories, luxury cars etc? Consumption is being fueled by a population explosion. How many of us are willing to give up the pleasure of rearing children? And can you imagine what will happen to world economies if consumption is curtailed? They will collapse, triggering a major economic meltdown. We are caught in a vicious circle. If you don’t cut consumption we will lose our home – if we cut consumption we will trigger an economic crisis. In my opinion – it is better to cut consumption and prepare for a spartan living rather than lose our environment.
We have put our Earth in such state that pulling it back from imminent doom needs us to adopt extremely drastic steps. We need to become spartan in living. Become like Mahatma Gandhi and live on a bare minimum. Be prepared to produce by ourselves the necessities….which may look like going primitive! How many of us are willing to do it?
Frankly – we have no choice. It may take time for people to realize this. I call upon those who agree to come forward and join hands so that we can give momentum to this thought line.
