Part 1: Was that love worthy?

Continued…

It had almost been a month since Pronoy and Nikita took up the tag of “Love-birds”. For their Instagram followers, this pair seemed perfect. Nikita had alienated her friends for a long time now and Pronoy was the only emotional support for her. She was the “most available person” for Pronoy. She could not take care of her feelings alone and was highly dependent on him. Pronoy was also available for her all the time, but sometimes ignored her while she was telling him about her friends and other small daily happenings. Still, they enjoyed each other’s company.

Pronoy’s twelfth standard exams were round the corner and Nikita was really worried. Pronoy was a bright student but, this time he was not actually prepared and Nikita knew it.

In order to let him concentrate on his studies, Nikita made a plan of isolating him with his books. She told Pronoy that she won’t talk to him for more than twenty minutes a day till his exams got over. The plan didn’t really work in helping Pronoy fuel his memory with the Mathematical formulas or the physics numericals.

The end term examinations had started and the boy who once used to answer almost all the questions, was looking out for the questions that he could attempt in order to merely pass. Whenever Nikita called him to know about his exam performance, a frustrated Pronoy would reply,

“It was not too well, but will try to score better in the next subject.”

All Nikita could do was to wish him the best for his next exam. Meanwhile, Pronoy already had a blurred vision of the poor marks getting printed in his marksheet.

As soon as the exams got over, Pronoy and Nikita were spending their evenings together. Nikita felt a change in Pronoy’s behavior. For a week, she tried to figure out the reason but, she couldn’t. She thought that he was tensed because of his poor performance in the exams. Everything she did to cheer him up went in vain.

After getting ignored for two weeks straight, a red-faced Nikita texted Pronoy,

“What has happened to you? I’m trying to make you happy by every means I can. But you’re just ignoring me like I’m chasing you too desperately. Whatever is wrong please just tell me, I’m here to make you comfortable.”

Four hours went by but, Pronoy hadn’t yet seen her text. Nikita called him but he didn’t respond to that too. Nikita texted him to pick up her call. Pronoy saw the text but didn’t reply.

Nikita was getting tensed and wanted to make sure if Pronoy was well. She texted his close friends and they also didn’t give a satisfactory reply.

It was midnight, Nikita texted Pronoy,

“Are you okay? Can we meet tomorrow evening at six?”

Pronoy replied,

“Yes, I’m doing good. I have an engagement at six, better at five?”

Nikita agreed and they were set to meet the next day, which also marked their three months of being the “Love-birds”. They had decided to meet at the same café where they had their first coffee together.

Pronoy reached there at exact five and was waiting for Nikita. As always, she was a bit late. Pronoy had already ordered a Chocolate Cappuccino for himself and her favorite Hazelnut Latte. The order got served as soon as Nikita arrived.

Nikita to Pronoy,

“Why were you not responding to my texts or call?”

Pronoy replied,

“Was a bit busy. And I need to talk to you something important.”

Nikita asked him to proceed.

Pronoy said,

“Nikita, it has been a great journey with you. You and I had so much fun being together. All the time we spent together was crazy and full of excitement. We were so much of a perfect couple. But…”

*Pronoy took a pause*

“We are just not good for each other’s career. We always had an emotional support for each other and were available day-night but, we never tried to help the other in studies or professional life. I have done too bad in my exams and this is going to be the worst stamp on my head all my life. You’re in your twelfth standard now, and I don’t want to be the reason you score less and make your dream university slip off your hand. I think it will be better if we end the things here itself so we may have focus on our careers as first priority.”

With moist eyes, red cheeks, shivering legs and a bit faster than usual heart rate, her brain was unable to process an appropriate reply to Pronoy.

Nikita murmured,

“Okay, bye.”

She left the half-filled Latte on the table and the café instantly.

Pronoy too left the café but, before leaving he made sure that Nikita was not connected to him at any social media platforms. He blocked her almost everywhere he could have.

Two months went by, Pronoy had made it to a decent college and almost everything was sorted for him. He was flirting with two girls at that time, and knew that they were just a proposal away from being his girlfriend. In real, he was not much comfortable with any of them and felt a void somewhere. There was actually no one he could call at midnight and talk for hours.

After a few days of critical thinking, he finally thought of going back to Nikita. He had so much to tell her and wanted to hear her unnecessary talks too.

Pronoy unblocked Nikita on Instagram and instantly received a ton of messages that were sent by her while she was blocked.

The messages read:

“Pronoy, can we please try once more? I will give my best to make you focus on your studies. We will focus on things equally together. I literally have no one to talk to, my friends are also trying to ignore me because of the way I treated them for months. I’m not even having sound sleep these days. Can we just give it one more try please?”

Pronoy texted her back, “Yessssssss, we will!! Call tonight? And also, I don’t want to use telepathy, so may I again have your number please? 🙂 ”

Six days went by but, she hadn’t even seen his text. Pronoy was annoyed and texted Nikita’s friend, Mahek, to ask her to reply.

Mahek texted Pronoy,

“Nikita cannot reply to your texts. So, there is no need to contact her now.”

Pronoy had his ego hurt and told Mahek that Nikita also wished to talk to him.

Mahek took a few minutes to reply,

“Nikita is no more. She was travelling to her grandma’s house last weekend, when her dad lost control of the car. The car got toppled over costing lives of Nikita and her dad. Her mother was saved but she has lost her legs.”

Pronoy was frozen knowing about Nikita’s loss. The world collapsed for him. She was the only girl with whom he was his real self.

Pronoy knew that he wasn’t with Nikita when she needed him the most. He was no more in the state to face people. He no longer had his wit, and was ashamed to face the world. Pronoy was never seen at the football field again, and never took a part in any kind of debate. He stopped participating in any activity that involved any other person to form a team.

Books on literature, self-help, psychology and biographies became his friends. Solo motorcycle long rides proved to be a refreshment for him. He slowly transformed himself to a total introvert and totally self-dependent human. He was no longer in a hunt for popularity but, satisfaction in everything he did.

Nikita made Pronoy a better human being and someone who wished to play a good part in this world for the rest of his life. Unfortunately, she was not there to see him as a good boy.
