SAMBALPUR: Denizens of Sambalpur expressed displeasure against the railways after their demand of a direct train to Allahabad was ignored in the new rail budget. "We are totally displeased as our demand of extension of the Jammu Tawi-Rourkela to Sambalpur was not taken care by the railways despite our repeated demand for it. Since the train runs via Allahabad, the extension would have fulfilled the expectation of the people of the region as Allahabad is a place where most people go to perform the last rites of their family members," said convenor of Sambalpur Nagarik Kalyan Samiti, Mahendra Mishra.
The samiti is mulling to launch a 'rail roko' agitation in support of the demand. People were also unhappy at the frequency of Visakhapatnam-Amritsar (Hirakud express), which runs via Sambalpur, not being increased to thrice a week as per their demand. There was widespread disappointment at Jammu Tawi-Rourkela express not getting an extension either.
However, the budget introduced a new weekly train from Bhubaneswar to Hazrat Nizamuddin via Sambalpur town, providing some solace to people here.
