The click trick

Spending big bucks to get a professional portfolio is one of the latest trends and if you ask about the reason then everyone has a different tale to tell.
The click trick
Many people are shelling out a fair amount of money to get professional portfolios made. PT finds out more.
Just take a look around you. You will inevitably come across many people who have spent a lot of money to get portfolios done. They need not be models or actors. They need not be candidates who are eligible for marriage. The question is: what makes them do so?
Sushant Singh, copywriter, says, “I got my portfolio done because I wanted to put my photographs on a popular social networking site and attract people to my profile.”
And, it seems that he has been fairly successful in making friends by adopting the approach.

So also Jaidev Shinde, a software engineer, says that he got his portfolio done for Rs 2,000 to feel good about himself and to know how handsome he looks.
“I got 20 photographs, which include three big, coloured photos and those in sepia tone and black-and-white, for just Rs 2,000. Isn’t that great?” he asks.
There are many more like Jai and Sudhakar who have had professional portfolios done. Shrikant Hambarde, who works as a director and script writer, has a different reason though. He says, “I did it out of plain curiosity — to check out if I can also look good. And yes, I proved it to myself that I’m no less.”

Prashant Patil, a fashion photographer of the Bunty-Prashant duo, elaborates, Everybody wants to look good in a picture. In fact, one can look better in a photograph than in real life. There are many artificial things that are used to enhance one’s beauty when a portfolio is made. That includes lights, make up, hairstyle, expensive and stylish clothes etc.”
So, how much do portfolios cost? Amol Gole, a fashion photographer who has done stills for films like Mangal Pandey — The Rising and Rang De Basanti, says, “A portfolio can cost anything between Rs 2,000 and Rs 25,000. That expense is simply not worth it. Many people come to me to get their portfolios done, but I reject them if I realise that they are doing it just to prove a point to others.”
Times change. One trend makes way for another. One form of fashion dies. Another takes over. So, will it be fair to say that getting portfolios done is a mere fad which will disappear with the passage of time? Possible. To start with, however, everyone must understand why a portfolio needs to be made.
