After this I went on to study fashion at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York.

What were your ambitions then?

I wanted to become a politician at that time. I was very serious about it, but then somewhere down the line it all changed. I had been working in my mother’s clothes store then. It is there that I created a line of clothes which sold like hot cakes.

Did you bunk a lot?

I might sound boring when I say this, but I was always very academically inclined. I was very serious about studies, especially Political Science. I rarely bunked classes and if I did, it was for a very good reason, like maybe the teacher was really bad. But, for instance, I didn’t miss Nandini Sardesai’s class on Sociology for anything. I absolutely loved it.

How has college changed now?

A lot has changed since then. These days, I see a lot of youngsters bunking just for the sake of it, just to look cool and hang out with friends or something like that. Also, a lot of students have started smoking and that can prove to be a harmful habit.
Any particular anecdotes you remember?

Well, I don’t really recollect anything in specific, but I do remember how the presence of Mandira Bedi, Cyrus Broacha and others brought a lot of vibrancy and humour into college. In general, we used to have a great time hanging out together.

Did you date in college?

Oh yes! In fact, I had a boyfriend when I was 16 years old. Then, at the age of 18, I started seeing this guy who is now my husband. We had the longest courtship for sure. I got married at 23, but it all happened so fast that I don’t even remember how.
