People want tunes that they can hum.
I have always believed in Bryan Adam’s philosophy of ‘18 till I die’. This helps me be young at heart. As far as connecting with youngsters goes, I still remember my college days — this helps me touch base with young minds.

Speaking of touching base, the music of Ishq Vishk seems to have struck the right note.

It has! The music of the film was popular with young minds. Songs such as I Believe In Love, Chot Dil Pe Lagi are popular not just because of the music but even because of the expression they have. My favourite song in the film is Chot Dil Pe Lagi.

You have just wrapped up Gurinder Chaddha’s Bride & Prejudice.

This is my first international film. It was fabulous working with someone who has the ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ quality. I love the concept of Bride And Prejudice because it is a musical.

Is it difficult to compose music for Hindi films as compared to the Englishmusic market?

Honestly, for me, language is not a barrier. When I am composing music or thinking about it, it is important to look beyond just the production of sounds — beats are something which one enjoys but doesn’t remember forever.

What one grooves to eventually is the music and the harmony. It is important that we compose tunes that people can hum.

Of all the genres in the Indian context, which is your favourite?

The trend of remixes is on. Originality will have to make a comeback. Lounge music is also very good to listen to. But my vote goes to hip-hop.

What’s your take on mixing Hindi and English in songs?

People need change. Everyone is experimenting with rap, fusion, global and world music. Harmony and originality will have to come back. I, for one, am all for originality.
