US fake varsity: NRI techie gets six-month jail

NEW DELHI: US-based NRI software professional Phanideep

was convicted on Wednesday by a US court in

Detroit

and given six-month jail term for recruiting students to the fake

Farmington University

, which was set up by the

US Immigration

and Customs Enforcement to crackdown on immigration fraud. He was taken in custody soon after the verdict.

Phanideep, who had studied

engineering

in Hyderabad before moving to the US 11 years ago for a job, maintained that he was not aware that it was a fake university and went by the university’s website that it was genuine. Phanideep will be deported to India after serving his jail term.
