HYDERABAD: A 27-year-old man from Hyderabad's Dabeerpura died in a road mishap in San Francisco’s Bayview district on June 23.
Syed Waseem Ali had gone to the US as an international student and the car in which he was travelling met with an accident at 1.15am at the intersection of Third Street and Paul Avenue.
A CCTV video footage showed that the car crashed into another car proceeding in a different direction at the intersection. Waseem Ali died on the spot.
Another woman passenger succumbed to her injuries in the hospital. One more woman is recuperating. The passengers had boarded the vehicle using a ride share app.
Syed Waseem Ali was a resident of Fremont, California, according to his driver’s licence. He had travelled to the US in 2015 with a visa for study in the Silicon Valley University.
The Consulate General of India in San Francisco was informed about the death of the man in the road accident by social worker Amjed Ullah Khan. He also provided the CGI, San Francisco telephone numbers of the victim’s brothers in Hyderabad, to assist the family.
Responding to the request, CGI, San Francisco tweeted: “Extremely sorry to hear about this unfortunate incident. Will immediately contact the authorities including SFPD to ascertain facts and action taken so far. Consulate will extend all assistance.” The CGI also asked for more details.
Meanwhile., friends of Syed Waseem Ali put up a crowdfunding appeal seeking contributions to bear the funeral expenses and transportation of the body to India. Out of the $60,000 goal, $41,000 was raised by more than 950 people in just 16 hours.
“Waseem Ali an international student from Hyderabad, India. A resident of Fremont was a life loving and caring person. We met Waseem for the first time when we were searching for accommodation we ended living with each other as roommates and close friends for the past four years. Sadly Waseem Ali passed away in a fatal accident occurred this morning in San Francisco (23 June 2019). We kindly request for your donation to help the family meet funeral expenses and transportation of the belongings and body of the deceased to India,” the fundraiser appeal put up by Mohammed Azhar read.
