Indian Americans in race for elections in November 2022

Ro Khanna (Democratic Party) is a member of the US House, representing California's 17th Congressional district. He assumed office on January 3, 2017. His current term ends on January 3, 2023. Khanna is running for re-election and is on the ballot in the general election on November 8, 2022. He advanced from the primary on June 7.

Ami Bera (Democrat) is a member of the US House, representing California's 7th Congressional district. He assumed office on January 3, 2013. His current term ends on January 3, 2023. He is also running for re-election having advanced from the June 7 primary.


Raja Krishnamoorthi (Democrat), a three-term Congressman from Illinois, won the Democratic primary from the state's 8th Congressional district on June 29. He defeated fellow Indian American Junaid Ahmed.


Pramila Jayapal (Democratic Party) is a member of the US House, representing Washington's 7th Congressional district. She assumed office on January 3, 2017. Her current term ends on January 3, 2023. She is running for re-election and is on the ballot in the Democratic primary on August 2, 2022. Jayapal is a former Democratic member of the Washington state senate having represented District 37 from 2014 to 2016.

Rishi Kumar is running for election to the US House to represent California’s 16th Congressional district, in the general election on November 8, 2022, contesting against fellow Democrat and incumbent Anna Eshoo. Kumar advanced from the Democratic primary election on June 7.


Megan Srinivas, an Indian American infectious diseases physician, based in Des Moines, Iowa, has won the Democratic nomination in Iowa’s House District 30 primary on June 7. She will face Republican Jerry Cheevers in the November 8 elections. If elected, Srinivas would be the second Asian American woman to serve in the Iowa House after Swati Dandekar.

Kesha Ram, a Democratic Party member of the Vermont state senate, representing Chittenden district, had decided to run for election to the US House to represent Vermont's at-large Congressional district but withdrew before the Democratic primary on August 9, 2022. She has now announced her plan to run for re-election for the state senate with her current term ending on January 4, 2023. The general election is on November 8, 2022. A primary is scheduled for August 9, 2022.


Dimple Ajmera (Democratic Party), an at-large member of the Charlotte City Council in North Carolina, is running for re-election. She assumed office on December 4, 2017. Her current term ends in 2022. She is on the ballot in the general election on July 26, 2022. She advanced from the Democratic primary on May 17, 2022. A working mother, Ajmera is a certified public accountant and two-term Charlotte City councilwoman. She has successfully championed affordable healthcare for thousands of city employees. Ajmera was born in Surat and went to the United States when she was 16.

Dr Arvind Venkat, an emergency room doctor at Allegheny General Hospital, advanced from the Democratic primary for Pennsylvania House of Representatives District 30 on May 17, 2022. The general election is scheduled for November 8, 2022.


Kumar P Barve is a Democrat member of the Maryland House of delegates representing District 17, in Montgomery County. He was the first Indian-American to be elected to a state legislature in the United States. From 2002 to 2015, Barve served as majority leader of the House of Delegates. He assumed office in 1991. His current term ends on January 11, 2023 and he is running for re-election. He is on the ballot in the Democratic primary on July 19, 2022.

Suraj Patel (Democratic Party) is running for election to the US House to represent New York's 12th Congressional district. He has declared candidacy for the Democratic primary scheduled on August 23, 2022. The general election will be held on November 8, 2022. Patel was a candidate for the same Congressional district in 2018 but lost the primary. Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, he earned a BA in political science from Stanford University in 2005 and then a law degree from the New York University School of Law in 2009.


Ashmi Sheth (Democrat), a policy writer and supervisor who earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2014 and a graduate degree from Columbia University, is also running for election to the US House from the same Congressional district of New York. She has been affiliated with the League of Women Voters and Manhattan Young Dems.


Indian Americans Nabeela Syed and Kevin Olickal have won the Democratic primaries for Illinois state legislature and will be running against Republican candidates in the November elections. If they win, they will become the first South Asian Americans in the Illinois state legislature. Syed, 23, won the Democratic primary for the 51st House district, and Olickal, 29, won the Democratic primary for the 16th House district, in elections held on June 28. Syed promises to be an advocate for causes the community members hold dear to their hearts, such as equal rights, healthcare, education, and taxes. In November 2022, she will be running against Republican incumbent Chris Bos.

Aruna Miller (Democratic Party) is running for election for Lieutenant Governor of Maryland. She is on the ballot in the Democratic primary on July 19, 2022. She was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, representing District 15. She assumed office in 2011. She left office on January 9, 2019. Miller was a Democratic candidate for Maryland's 6th congressional district in the 2018 election but she was defeated by David Trone in the Democratic primary. The Maryland gubernatorial election will be held on November 8. The Democratic and Republican primaries are scheduled for July 19.

Ashwani Jain (Democrat) is running for election for Governor of Maryland. He is on the ballot in the Democratic primary on July 19. Jain was born in Rockville, Maryland and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 2012 and a graduate degree from George Washington University in 2017. His career experience includes working as a programme director for the National Kidney Foundation.
