The 13th annual Desi Dhamaka is a student-run cultural event, which showcases the talents of South Asian students of the University of Washington, Seattle.
It has now grown into the largest display of South Asian performance arts in the Pacific Northwest. The show was held on April 4, 2015 from 7PM to 10PM at the university’s Meany Hall. The tickets, ranging from $13 to $17 were sold on campus, online and at the event.
The word 'Desi' is evolved from the Sanskrit term 'Desha', meaning country. The word ‘Dhamaka’ is a Hindi term, meaning explosion.
Together they mean “a cultural explosion”. The show comprised seve acts with spectacular Indian dances and amazing traditional vocals. Kahaani, Natya, Giddha, UW Bhangra, Dub City Bhangra, DangeRaas Dawgs and UW Awaaz were the seven groups who put up the show.
This year, Jus Reign, a comedian whose YouTube and Vine videos are popular among the South Asian community, flew in from Toronto to host the event.
The Desi Dhamaka crew also teamed up with Girl in Yellow Foundation (GIY), an organization that focuses on bridging the gender disparity by providing scholarships for education for young girls in rural India.
The mission of the show is to spread awareness of South Asian culture by providing a platform for University of Washington students to showcase their talent to the Pacific Northwest community.
Around 1,200 students, alumni, and families from the greater Pacific Northwest gathered together and made this cultural event a huge success.
