The US puts a new settler into all kinds of trials. I recall an incident about my initial days in the US. I wanted to visit an apartment and my hotel provided me a contact number for a cab. I was happy to see an Indian name on the card. When the doorbell rang, I heard Manoj Bhai for the first time. He picked me up and we just had a discussion about the apartment and my thoughts about the US.
In the meantime, I got to know that there was no direct commute available for my office and started thinking how I will manage every day.
It was then that Manoj Bhai offered me his carpool service on a minimum charge. This was the best option I could have opted for and I joined his carpool service. Even now, Manoj Bhai punctually comes at 9 and drops me back at 5pm. To my surprise, I got to know that Manoj was a senior engineer at the Sabarmati river dam project in Baroda. I couldn't believe why someone will leave such a handsome job and good salary. Manoj too was happy in India and very satisfied with his work. He used to enjoy his vacations, including all government holidays.
Moreover, he was the only engineer who could set the angle for the dam. He was always in demand and his services were utilized at various projects. When I asked him why he left such a relaxed and respective job, the answer was unexpected: "Aapne bacche ki padhai ke liye (for our kids' education)".
His son wanted to study in the USA and, hence, he came here and started a carpool service. Apart from running the carpool service during the daytime, Manoj, along with his wife, works at departmental stores to earn extra money. With no holidays even on Saturdays and Sundays, I can imagine his life. This makes me think about sacrifices all parents make for their kids. Manoj Bhai is a perfect example of a parent who sacrificed everything just for the bright future of his kids.
This article is dedicated to all those parents who sacrificed their joyful life they could have spent in their motherland just for the sake of their children.
