The South Asian Student Association (SASA) of Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU), Saginaw, Michigan, celebrated India's very own 'Festival of Colors (
Holi)' on Saturday, April 8, 2017. This was the fourth year of celebration in the university.
The programme continued through the afternoon, with more than 600 people, including students, faculty members and South Asian and local community members.
SVSU's President, Dr Donald Bachand and Provost, Dr Deborah Huntley were the chief guests.
Main attractions of the indoor celebrations were a series of cultural programs followed by delicious food. A Mehendi-Henna Tattoo booth for students and guests, photo booth for visitors who wanted to capture the fun moments during the event were the main attractions. An art contest, introduced last year, had the theme 'Holi' this time around.
After the lunch organised by a local Indian restaurant, the cultural programme started with the President of SASA, Ipsit Patki welcoming everyone to be a part of this grand event of India. A dance competition was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience as they cheered to performances. The three-hour long indoor programme ended with a musical performance by Bishrut and Sandesh followed by a thank you note and distribution of prizes for the winners of the dance and art competition.
The outdoor event's star attraction was 'Color the President', where all students and faculty members got together and played Holi with the President of SVSU, Dr Donald Bachand and Provost, Dr Deborah Huntley.
The primary mission of this student-run and faculty-guided association is to celebrate the diversity and embrace cultural awareness on campus. Other than various small events, SASA organises India's signature event, Festival of Colors (Holi) every year in April.
