The

Southwestern Michigan India Association

(SMIA) organised the Independence Day celebrations at Eaton Park, St Joseph,

Michigan

on August 13.

The event was attended by around 300 people of the Indian community living in the area.

The President of SMIA, Ms Kavita Singh, presided over the event and said she was proud to be a part of this celebration and would continue to support the Indian community in keeping up with the cultural and traditional events as well as the national spirit.

The celebrations included a kids' band, food stalls selling Indian delicacies, and national anthems both the US and India. Few children also dressed up as freedom fighters like Rani Laxmi Bai, Bhagat Singh and Jawahar Lal Nehru.

The highlight of the event was a cut-out of the map of India. People participating in the event stood around the map and formed a human chain.
