SYDNEY: Wyndham, Melbourne's outer western suburb which is home to about 10,000 Indian immigrants, has emerged a strong contender in its aspiration to host the Indian Cultural Precinct for which the local government has already allotted AUD 500,000. A petition signed by 400 people is already doing the rounds to this effect.
The proposed precinct would be used as a place to hold festivals like Diwali and Holi, and will act as a support centre for the community and businesses, will turn out to be a drawcard for tourism and will work as a meeting place and function centre for the community.
Interestingly, two of Wyndham’s 11 councillors, Intaj Khan and Gautam Gupta, are of Indian origin and are behind this petition. 2011 Census data shows 10,152 people with Indian heritage living in Wyndham forming 6.3 per cent of the city’s population as against the state average of 2.5 per cent.
Multicultural affairs minister Robin Scott has formed an Indian cultural precinct advisory panel to help select the location based on criteria like history and pattern of Indian immigrant settlements and businesses with Indian background, budgetary considerations and management capabilities. The decision will be made by August this year.
