Here are three things the British Columbia NDP Government can quickly do to enhance our democracy and increase their chances of electoral success.
1. Reduce the voting age to 16The independence referendum in Scotland allowed 16-year-olds to vote so a precedent has been set. Youth and young adults may also be more likely to lean left.
2. Make voting mandatoryThis would increase voter turnout by ensuring the poor and working-class vote! And it is likely poor and working-class people may also lean left.
Australia has had mandatory voting since 1924 in federal elections so another precedent has been long established.
3. Gender equalityPass legislation that would mandate that all government “appointments” are made up of at least fifty percent women. Giving women an equal voice in the bureaucracy will have an impact. And I have more faith in women to safeguard our health and social programs than men. Sorry, nothing personal!
There you go! Three simple steps the BC NDP Government should legislate today!
