On Thursday, officials from

Dadar

police station arrested Santosh Kumar Singh alias Bablu Thakur, who allegedly used to extort hawkers at Dadar station and the nearby flower market.

Singh, the police learnt, owned at least 10 properties in the city, several vehicles, including a

Toyota

Fortuner, and 1.5 kg gold.

According to the police, Singh has given loans to people to the tune of Rs 1 crore.

Singh has several cases registered against him in Dadar and Shivaji Park police stations and

Dadar GRP

station for extortion.

Later, the police learnt that his wife Rita Singh, 38, was also a partner in his crimes and arrested her from Navi Mumbai.

“While our team was bringing her to GRP police station in Dadar on Friday, she on seeing a fast local train tried to jump in front of it and escape to the other side. However, after jumping on the tracks, she slipped and fell down,” said assistant police inspector Arjun Ghanwat of Dadar GRP.

“Seeing Ghanwat jump, the motorman of the down fast local train hit the brakes immediately, and the train stopped a few metres away from the two,” said another police officer.

“We will recommend Ghanwat’s name for a reward to our senior officials. The woman was trying to flee. Ghanwat risked his life and saved her. He has suffered injuries in the exercise,” said Dnyaneshwar Katkar, senior police inspector of Dadar GRP police station.

“I was afraid that the woman would either flee or be crushed under the train. In both cases, we would have been blamed as we had arrested her. So, I had to save her at any cost,” said Ghanwat.
