AMD launches new APUs and VR ready Radeon GPU
AMD, at the ongoing Computex 2016 conference in Taipei, Taiwan, launched numerous new APUs as well as a new GPU. The company introduced nine new APUs (short for Accelerated Processing Unit), which are a hybrid of both CPU and GPU. In addition, it has also launched the Radeon RX480 graphics card specially for handling virtual reality content.
Talking about the APUs, the 7th generation A-Series processors are based on Stoney Ridge and Bristol Ridge platforms respectively. The company says that while Stoney Ridge delivers 52% faster performance over its predecessors, Bristol Ridge delivers 56% faster performance than the “Carrizo” APU that was introduced last year. The company, however, has not yet detailed the availability and pricing of the two chips.
The new Bristol Ridge chips include FX 9830P, FX 9800P, A12-9730P, A10-9630P and A10-9600P, and these come with 4 CPU cores and 8 graphics cores. On the other hand, the Stoney Ridge chips - A9-9410, A6-9210 and E2-9010, have 2 CPU cores and 5 graphics cores.
AMD also announced the Radeon RX 480 GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). Priced at $199, the GPU is said to be launching on June 29. It will deliver a low-price solution aimed at premium PC VR experience.
The company says that the Radeon RX 480 GPU includes the company’s Polaris Architecture. It will come in two variants having different amount of GDDR5 RAM - 4GB and 8GB. One of the variants is said to be HTC Vive ready and certified for Oculus Rift.
The company also revealed some new information about its yet to be launched Summit Ridge processors, based on Zen architecture. The first sample, as per the company, will reach the partners in a few weeks, followed by a wider rollout starting Q3 this year.
