Oppo R9, R9 Plus are iPhone 6S clones with 16MP selfie cameras

NEW DELHI: Chinese brand Oppo has unveiled in China the world’s first smartphones with 16MP selfie cameras. Named Oppo R9 and R9 Plus, the two smartphones bear the same design as Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6S smartphones.


Oppo R9 has a 5.5-inch AMOLED display with 1080x1920p resolution and has bezels measuring just 1.66mm on the sides. The smartphone has an octa-core Mediatek Helio P10 processor (four cores @ 1GHz + four cores @ 2GHz) under the hood, backed by 4GB RAM. Supporting dual-sim cards in a hybrid setup, the device comes with 64GB of internal storage and can accommodate microSD cards of capacities up to 128GB.


For imaging, Oppo R9 features a 13MP camera with 5-element lens, f/2.2 aperture and 80.6-degree field of view on the back, while the selfie camera has 16MP resolution with f/2.0 aperture.


Oppo R9 Plus has a slightly bigger 6-inch AMOLED screen with Full HD resolution and runs on the octa-core Snapdragon 652 chipset (four 1.82GHz cores + four 1.2GHz cores). The smartphone features 4GB RAM, 64 and 128GB built-in storage, and 128GB microSD card support in a hybrid setup. The front camera of Oppo R9 Plus has the same setup as its smaller sibling’s, while the rear camera has 16MP resolution and can capture videos in 4K resolution.

Both Oppo R9 and R9 Plus are powered by Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system, while their battery capacities are 2,850mAh and 4,120mAh, respectively. The two smartphones feature fingerprint scanners below the display, 4G support, and VOOC fast-charging technology.


Oppo R9 and R9 Plus will cost 2,799 yuan and 3,299 yuan in China, respectively and will be available starting March 24. There is no word on the global release of the smartphones yet.
