During a professional tennis career that saw him play across the globe, Amritraj beat the world's best, including

John McEnroe

, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, John Newcombe and Stan Smith. He won 16 ATP singles titles and twice reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon (1973, 1981) and the US Open (1973, 1974), finishing his career with a singles record of 390-302. As a doubles player, he won 14 and had a 264-218 record. Amritraj achieved his highest singles ranking of 16 in July 1980.

Ranked No 1 in Asia for 14 years, Amritraj holds the record for the longest run in Davis Cup play, where as India's captain he lead the team to the finals twice in 1974 and 1987.

He was conferred the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour, in 1983.
