In 2017, the year in which the TOISA jury based its criteria for performances on, Bopanna lifted his first Grand Slam title by winning the French Open mixed doubles trophy with Canada's Gabriela Dabrowski, thus becoming the fourth Indian tennis player to clinch a major. In just his second Grand Slam final, Bopanna teamed with Dabrowski to beat Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Colombia's Robert Farah 2-6, 6-2, 12-10.

His other success last year included winning the Chennai Open with Jeeven Nedunchezhiyan and the Monte Carlo Masters and Erste Bank Open with his Uruguayan partner Pablo Cuevas after a three-set win over Spain's Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez.

In an otherwise bleak year for Indian tennis, the 37-year-old's Grand Slam title found weightage with the TOISA jury comprising Abhinav Bindra, Bhaichung Bhutia, Devendra Jhajharia, Reeth Abraham and Gautam Gambhir along with the Chief Editor of Times Internet Ltd, Rajesh Kalra.
