Top 5 coastal drives in India for breathtaking ocean views

There’s something about coastal drives that hits differently. The salty breeze, and the endless views of blue meeting blue gets etched in your memory in such a manner that you will likely forget any time soon. While India has over 7,500 km of coastline, it also offers some fantastic road trip opportunities that promise everything from quiet backwaters to beachside bonfires.
If you are also into road trips, here are 5 coastal circuits in India where the drive is just as stunning as the destination.

2/6

Malabar Coast

It usually refers to the western coastline, stretching from Konkan to Kanyakumari. You can opt to start your journey from Mangaluru and follow the coast southward into a land of laterite cliffs, sea forts, and spicy biryanis. From the massive Bekal Fort to hidden coves near Thottada, the route is dotted with cultural gems and beach resorts that haven’t yet made it to Instagram.
Top experiences: Watch a Theyyam ritual in a village temple, Stay in a beach hut in Kannur, and sample banana chips straight from a local shop.

3/6

Konkan Coast

Skip the Mumbai–Goa highway rush and take the coast instead. This Konkan coastal trail is a visual and culinary delight. You’ll pass through quaint fishing villages, Portuguese-style bungalows, mango orchards, and rocky beaches with historic forts like Sindhudurg and Vijaydurg guarding the shore.
Must-dos: Visit the quiet, postcard-perfect Ganpatipule Beach, and when in Goa, a feni-fueled sunset is an experience that you can try.

4/6

Coromandel Coast

Drive south along the East Coast Road (ECR), believed to be the most scenic coastal highway in India, and you’ll hit a stretch that offers you a blend of Dravidian heritage with French nostalgia. Stop at Mahabalipuram’s rock-cut temples, sip a cold brew in Puducherry’s White Town, and explore the rarely-visited Chola temples in Chidambaram and Nagapattinam.
Don’t miss: Sunset by the Shore Temple, Cycling through French lanes in Puducherry, and more.

5/6

Saurashtra Coast

The Saurashtra peninsula offers a wild mix: sacred sites, Portuguese ruins, and coastal roads that brush up against the Arabian Sea. Start from Bhavnagar, visit the Jain temples of Palitana, then unwind in the island utopia of Diu. From there, it’s a pilgrimage trail with a twist, Somnath, Porbandar (Gandhi’s birthplace), and Dwarka, where the myth meets the sea.
Highlights: Evening aarti at Somnath Temple, Diu’s old Portuguese forts and empty beaches, Dwarka’s sea-side temples and marine excursions.

6/6

Odisha Coast

Odisha’s coast is underrated but packed with serene beauty and spiritual energy. Start near Gopalpur-on-Sea, pass through the dolphin-filled waters of Chilika Lake, and arrive in Puri, one of India’s Char Dhams. The road to Konark hugs the sea with pine groves and ocean views, and the final stretch to Paradip is great for nature lovers and solitude-seekers.
Must-see spots: Chilika’s Satapada for dolphin spotting, Konark Sun Temple (a UNESCO marvel), and more.
