AI-powered tropical Dome Forest to transform Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad
In a recent update, Ahmedabad will soon introduce a futuristic green space along its iconic Sabarmati Riverfront. This tropical forest dome will be complete with artificial rain, fog, and lush greenery which will be Inspired by Singapore’s world-renowned Cloud Forest at Gardens by the Bay.
The project is part of Gujarat’s larger vision to blend urban development with environmental sustainability as the new dome forest aims to offer a unique natural experience that replicates the feel of walking through a real tropical jungle, right in the heart of the city.
Let’s find out more:
Planned to be constructed near the sports complex on the western bank of the Sabarmati River, this tropical dome will cover a total area of 7,000 square meters, with the forest itself housed inside a massive 1,600 square meter dome elevated slightly above ground. With a budget of ₹22 crore, the project promises to be a milestone in Ahmedabad’s urban design, enhancing the riverfront’s appeal and making it a destination for both residents and tourists.
A remarkable feat
What makes this tropical forest particularly remarkable is the use of cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI). The entire system—from the regulation of artificial sunlight to water supply—will be managed by AI. This smart technology will ensure optimal growing conditions for exotic tropical plants such as orchids, heliconias, and alocasia, creating a self-sustaining indoor ecosystem.
This dome forest is only a small part of a much larger expansion plan for the Sabarmati Riverfront. The Gujarat government has appointed Surbana Jurong, a Singapore-based urban planning firm, to design and oversee phases four through six of the project.
These upcoming phases will stretch an additional 16.5 kilometers—from the Narmada Main Canal to the Chiloda Bridge—and will expand into areas like Gandhinagar and the fast-developing GIFT City. Once complete, the total length of the riverfront will be an impressive 38 kilometers.
Surbana Jurong is no stranger to Gujarat. In 2019, the firm worked on a large affordable housing project for the Gujarat Housing Board. They’re also known internationally for their work on riverfront developments, including a themed park project in China.
The earlier phases of the Sabarmati Riverfront, designed by HCP Design Planning and Management Pvt. Ltd. under noted architect Bimal Patel, transformed the urban landscape with walking paths, parks, and public spaces. Now, with phase five already underway and infrastructure in place, the vision for a more vibrant and green riverfront is becoming reality.
In addition to the tropical forest, the new phases will include an international park, ferry services, water taxis, libraries, cafés, and riverside promenades. A massive green belt is also in the pipeline, with plans to plant over 2.35 lakh trees.
So very soon, there will be a beautiful indoor garden in Ahmedabad!
