7 scenic train rides that lead straight to India’s dreamiest hill stations

Indian hill stations are beautiful beyond imagination. Having said that we can't deny that the roads or let' me say the tracks leading to your hill destinations and the whole journey in itself is an experience.

The combo of hill station and train journey makes it nearly impossible to decide what’s better, the breathtaking ride or the destination. Since both are dearest to our hearts, equal points to both. So, back to asking, “What’s better than reaching a hill station?” Getting there slowly, steadily, and scenically, with panoramic views unfolding outside your train window.

Also, India’s hill trains aren’t just about getting from Point A to Point B. They’re memory makers, and moving mountain postcards. Whether you want toy-town nostalgia or a route that takes you through jungles, these 7 scenic train journeys to Indian hill stations will make you fall in love with the journey itself.

2/8

Kalka to Shimla, Himachal Pradesh

This train takes you back in time. The narrow-gauge Kalka–Shimla railway climbs over 4,000 ft, twisting through 102 tunnels, 800+ bridges, and some of the most picturesque stretches in North India. This route is all about pine forests, pastel-colored hill homes, and sleepy British-era stations like Barog, where you’ll stop for tea and nostalgia.

3/8

Mettupalayam to Ooty, Tamil Nadu

South India’s only rack-and-pinion railway, this charming blue train climbs steep gradients through the Nilgiris. Starting from Mettupalayam, it winds past waterfalls, dense forests, tea plantations, and hairpin curves before reaching the breezy heights of Ooty, Queen of the Nilgiris. It’s interesting to note that this train ride is so atmospheric, it inspired scenes in several Tamil and Hindi films.

4/8

New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling, West Bengal

This one’s a classic, of course. Built in the late 1800s, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway chugs along a narrow track that hugs cliffs, loops dramatically at Batasia Loop, and offers front-row views of the majestic Kanchenjunga on clear days. You need to experience this journey once in your lifetime, as the train’s pace is perfect for soaking in the surrounding tea estates, colonial bungalows, and street-level crossings that blur the line between platform and town.

5/8

Pathankot to Joginder Nagar, Himachal Pradesh

Welcome to one of India’s most underrated rail gems. The Kangra Valley Railway snakes through the lower Himalayas with jaw-dropping views of the Dhauladhar range. Unlike touristy routes, this one takes you off the beaten track, through pine forests, riverside villages, and old-world stations where nothing moves too fast, including time.

6/8

Silchar to Haflong, Assam

The only way to reach Assam’s only hill station, Haflong, is by a train that feels more like an expedition. This lesser-known route cuts through tunnels, over roaring rivers, and into misty valleys of the Dima Hasao district. Lush hills, tribal villages, and a jungle that hugs the railway line, are some of the highlights of this route. There’s barely any mobile signal—but who cares when every window frame is just mesmerising.

7/8

Neral to Matheran, Maharashtra

One of the last few no-car zones in India, Matheran is reached by a tiny, old-school train that crawls up from Neral, just outside Mumbai. With red laterite soil beneath you and forests on either side, the train ride is slow, scenic, and surreal, especially during monsoon, when the landscape explodes in green.

8/8

Bengaluru to Coonoor, via Mettupalayam

While not a single line, this combo gives you the best of both worlds: an overnight sleeper from the city, followed by a daylight toy train ride. Coonoor is the lesser-known alternative of Ooty, with prettier cafés, fewer crowds, and rolling tea hills - truly serene escape.
