5 things to keep in mind as a traveller visiting India for the first time

Travelling to India for the first time is an exciting and overwhelming experience. It is a country that cannot be described in any narrative, as each place feels like a new destination with a new language, cuisine, traditions, and lifestyle. From the chaotic cities to the peaceful landscapes, from the spiritual sites to the street culture, India is an overwhelming place, but in the most positive sense. The key to having a great time in this country is to be prepared, flexible, and have an open mind. Here are the top five things to remember when you’re visiting India for the first time.

Think regionally, not nationally

One of the biggest blunders that first-time tourists make is to try to visit too many places. India is a large country, and distances between two prominent points can be considerable. More than that, the experience in different regions is entirely different. You may get to know about Mughal art and shopping in North India, experience the beauty of nature in the south, and so on. Not to mention north east India, which is a completely different world. Do not try to visit all the regions; rather, try to visit one or two regions well. It is far better to visit India at a slow pace than to try to visit all the prominent points.

Be prepared for sensory overload

India is an overwhelming place. The first thing you may notice when you visit India is how overwhelming it can feel. The streets are crowded, the honking is constant, the markets are colorful, and the aromas are pungent. Cities in India can also be chaotic and unpredictable. This can all feel overwhelming if you are not used to it. The best thing to do in this case is to try to get used to it.

Take food and water precautions seriously

While Indian cuisine is a major highlight of any trip, especially for tourists, it’s imperative that you take the initial period seriously, especially when it comes to the food. While your system might not be accustomed to the spices, cooking styles, or water, it’s a good idea to ease your way into the local cuisine. While you’re at it, make sure you’re eating fresh, hot, and well-reviewed meals, especially at popular eateries. In addition, you should avoid tap water at all costs, sticking to filtered water instead. It’s a good idea to carry medication as well.

Respect the local customs and culture

India has a very traditional approach towards many things, and it is always good to be respectful of the local culture. Modest dressing is appreciated, especially when you visit religious sites or small towns. You will be required to remove your shoes when you enter religious sites, homes, and sometimes even shops. Public displays of affection are not really appreciated, and it is always a good idea not to take pictures of religious sites or people without asking. A good attitude can go a long way, and small gestures like greeting people properly can lead to good interactions.

Plan ahead, yet flexible

The transport system in India is quite developed; however, it is also quite unpredictable at times. For long-distance travel, the train is a preferred mode of transport in India; however, it is always recommended to book your tickets well in advance. For those who are short of time, flying is the best alternative. For intra-city commute, the most reliable mode of transport is app-based cabs. While planning your trip, it is also important to be flexible to avoid unnecessary hassles
