5 beautiful Himalayan treks for the monsoon

Monsoon might not be the perfect time for hiking but then there are some Himalayan hikes which can be enjoyed during the monsoon season. It is the time when flowers bloom, creating a beautiful, colourful valley while you trek through it, giving a surreal feeling. And if you’re lucky, you might spot some interesting wildlife too. Even though it might appear risky, you could have a great time looking at the beautiful landscapes.

Let’s take you through a journey of beautiful Himalayan trails for trekking during monsoon, perfect for your next rejuvenating vacation:

Markha Valley Trek

This valley is located in Ladakh and is the perfect location to visit between July and mid-September, as it is in the rain shadow region of the Himalayas and faces little rainfall. During the monsoon time, there are lush green meadows all around and alpine blooms around the area, which is very rare as this is a desert-like area. One can also enjoy the view in solitude, as there is less crowd, and an added bonus during this time is that since the valley passes through the Hemis National Park, trekkers might spot the snow leopards and Tibetan wolves too.

Parang La Trek

Parang La is set along the trade route of Ladakh and Spiti in Himachal Pradesh, so this connects the two valleys. This route is also under the rain shadow region, so during the monsoon period, the route stays dry and stable. What adds to the experience is that the route comes to life with lush greenery, and the mountain backdrop with the greenery creates a spectacular view. During the monsoon here, one can spot herds of kiang, bar-headed geese, and even Tibetan wolves, and there are fewer crowds here, making it the perfect time to visit.

Pin Valley Trek

This valley is located in the calm location of Lahaul and Spiti districts of Himachal Pradesh. This is the peaceful alternative to the ‘Valley of Flowers’, as it is very crowded during the monsoon season. This valley remains dry during this time as it falls under the rain shadow region, making it favourable for trekking. There is a lot of wildlife activity during this time. Trekkers can spot the blue sheep, ibex, Himalayan griffons, and even the golden eagles. During the monsoon here, exploring the traditional culture is even more enhanced, as one can enjoy homestays and even visit the old monasteries.

Bedni Bugyal & Bagwawasa

This beautiful trek trail is situated in Uttarakhand and begins right after the Roopkund trail ends. You will witness the most rare sight, the state flower of Uttarakhand called Brahma Kamal, at this route, as it blooms abundantly here during the monsoon season and is even more beautiful at night, also known as queen of the night. At this time, as the sky is clearer, one can witness the breathtaking view of the snow-capped peaks here, especially during sunrise and sunset. Trekkers can witness nature’s transformation from forest hues to swelling lakes and blooming flowers.

Darma Valley

This valley is located in Uttarakhand, and unlike other trails during monsoon, this valley is filled with seasonal flowers like Palti, also called local buckwheat, which is a reddish-pink blossom creating a captivating view all over the valley. The monsoon also swells the streams and waterfalls here, adding to the charm of the valley. At this time, the valley is buzzing so one can interact with the authentic tribes too. Nature lovers would love the monsoon mists that can be felt in the air.
