Season’s first heavy snowfall turns these 5 popular destinations in Himachal Pradesh into a winter wonderland

After weeks of dry cold spell and wait, winter finally arrived in Himachal Pradesh. A western disturbance moved across the region and brought the first major snowfall of this season, changing the landscape almost overnight. High-altitude and tribal areas started receiving steady snow while rain and strong winds lashed lower regions. Temperatures plummeted, and the cold suddenly seemed more intense than it had in recent weeks.
Be it any popular tourism spot or any hill town in the mountains, the effect of the snowfall was clearly felt on the roads and residents alike right from the beginning. As mentioned above, some places even woke up to see the first significant weather phenomenon of the year cover them in its blanket. Below are five prominent tourism spots to have been affected by the snowfall in Himachal Pradesh.

2/7

Shimla

Shimla saw its first proper snowfall of the season early in the day, with snow falling on and off for several hours. By morning, roads, rooftops, and trees across the city were covered in white, giving the state capital a completely different look.
However, the snowfall was not without its challenges. For instance, there was a drastic slow-down in traffic movement as cars tried to move on the icy surface of the roads. There were reportedly serious jams on major access routes into and out of town. Interestingly, while some people, like those visiting, were thrilled about the experience, many locals encountered difficulty because normal movement within town was affected.

3/7

Manali

Manali, one of Himachal Pradesh’s most popular tourist destinations, also received its first snowfall of the winter. Visitors who had been waiting for snow were delighted as the town and surrounding hills turned white within a short span of time.
At the same time, the authorities asked people to be cautious while traveling, mainly for people planning to go to destination areas that are at higher altitudes. There has been snowfall in the areas that are close to these roads, and the officials warned that the roads that go to Manali might be dangerous for travelers if more snow falls in the next few days.

4/7

Lahaul-Spiti

The snowfall in the high-altitude district of Lahaul-Spiti was heavier and more prolonged than in other parts. While Gondhla saw nearly 12 cm of snowfall, the Keylong and its surroundings received it uninterruptedly.
For people living in the district, snowfall during this period is expected, though it often leads to isolation when roads remain closed for long stretches. Despite the difficulties, the snowfall plays an important role in maintaining groundwater levels and supporting the fragile mountain ecosystem that the region depends on.

5/7

Kinnaur

Even the areas in the high reaches of Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh, famous for its apple orchards, received a significant amount of snow. Mountainous areas and orchards began to be consumed by the white veil. Kalpa received a significant amount of the white substance.
The farmers received this snowfall as a boon because experts claim that winter chilling is essential for quality improvement of apples as well as other fruits that grow in temperate climates. It may also facilitate better growth of crops in subsequent years because this winter actually started late.

6/7

Chamba

Parts of Chamba district recorded moderate snowfall, with some areas receiving around 6 cm. While the snow added to the scenic beauty of the region, it also raised concerns about travel safety, particularly in higher areas.
Chamba is among the districts where heavy snowfall and rain are expected at isolated locations. Authorities have advised residents to remain alert, as weather conditions may deteriorate further over the next few days.

7/7

Weather situation ahead

Furthermore, daytime temperatures have dropped significantly. They have gone down by almost 9 to 10 degrees in some areas. Considering the further increase in the amount of snow falling in the days to come, it has been advised to avoid travels to various areas, especially the hilly ones.
