Red alert in Rajasthan, yellow in Delhi: 5 important heatwave warnings travellers should know

April is getting hotter day-by-day! As temperatures soar across several states, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for a major heatwave that might impact large parts of the country this week.
IMD has issued a red alert for Rajasthan and yellow for Delhi. So those planning a trip, must be aware of the rising temperatures, the effects and how to protect from the sun.
Here are the top five things you need to know:

2/6

Yellow alert in Delhi

On Sunday, the national capital Delhi witnessed a maximum temperature of 38.2°C on Sunday. As per IMD data, this is almost three degrees above the seasonal norm. The capital continues to sweat under intense heat, which prompted the weather department to issue a yellow alert for Monday and Tuesday.

This means there is a moderate risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those exposed to the sun for longer periods or engaged in strenuous outdoor work.

3/6

Red alert in Rajasthan

On Monday, the IMD issued a red alert for parts of West Rajasthan, warning of extreme heat conditions that could lead to heatstroke or serious health complications, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and outdoor workers. The public is advised to stay indoors during peak heat hours and stay hydrated.

4/6

Heatwave pattern this week

The heatwave will persist across northwest and central India throughout the week.
Monday: Severe heatwave conditions are likely in Saurashtra, Kutch (Gujarat), and West Rajasthan. Other regions, including parts of East Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh, will also experience high temperatures. Coastal regions in Gujarat, Konkan, and Goa may see hot and humid weather.
Tuesday: Severe heatwave likely in Rajasthan, with isolated parts of Gujarat, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and West UP affected.

Wednesday: East Rajasthan may face severe heat, while the rest of Rajasthan, Delhi, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh will continue to sizzle.
Thursday: The heatwave will likely persist in isolated areas of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh.

5/6

Precautionary alerts

While a red alert remains for West Rajasthan, other regions like Delhi are under a yellow alert early in the week. These advisories aim to prompt people to take heat precautions seriously to avoid dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

6/6

IMD’s advice

The IMD advises avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, staying in cool places, wearing light clothing, and drinking sufficient water even if not thirsty. These steps are crucial to prevent heat exhaustion or more severe outcomes during this ongoing heatwave. Stay informed and stay safe!
