PM Modi to inaugurate full Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor in Uttar Pradesh today–What travellers need to know
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the full Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor in Uttar Pradesh today, dated February 22, 2026 at 1:00 PM, in Rally Ground in Mohiuddinpur, Meerut, as per Government of UP’s official post (@UPGovt) on X. This marks a major milestone in regional connectivity for the National Capital Region (NCR). The much-anticipated launch will make the entire 82-kilometre high-speed corridor operational, significantly reducing travel time between Delhi and Meerut. The Prime Minister will also flag off the Meerut Metro, which has been developed as part of the integrated transit system within the city. Once inaugurated, the Namo Bharat trains will run seamlessly from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Modipuram in Meerut, covering 82.15 km in approximately 55 minutes.
The official post on X (translated to English) read, “Under the guidance of the Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji and the leadership of Chief Minister @myogiadityanath ji, Uttar Pradesh is witnessing unprecedented momentum in modern transport infrastructure. Through enhanced connectivity, rapid urban mobility, and balanced regional development, the state is setting new benchmarks for progress and advancing toward a strong, inclusive direction of growth. In this series, with the inauguration of the Namo Bharat stretch (5 km) from Sarai Kale Khan to New Ashok Nagar in Delhi and the Namo Bharat stretch (21 km) from Meerut South to Modipuram, the entire Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor will be dedicated to the nation. Additionally, the Meerut Metro service from Meerut South to Modipuram (21 km) will also be launched, strengthening regional connectivity in a new way. This ambitious project will boost fast, safe, and environment-friendly urban transport, infusing new momentum into economic activities, expanding investment opportunities, and making life more convenient and accessible for millions of citizens. At the same time, by providing a solid foundation to the resolve of Viksit Bharat–Viksit Uttar Pradesh, it will establish new dimensions of regional development.”
The project, built at an estimated cost of over INR 30,000 crore, is expected to transform commuting patterns between Delhi and western Uttar Pradesh. The fare for the full journey is expected to be approximately INR 213, calculated at around INR 2.60 per kilometre.
Prime Minister Modi had laid the foundation stone of the Rapid Rail project on March 8, 2019. The 17-km priority section was inaugurated in October 2023, and subsequent extensions gradually brought the corridor closer to completion. With today’s event, the full Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor will be formally dedicated to the nation.
Meerut Metro will be the fastest metro rail in the country with a top speed of 120 km per hour. The train will consist of three coaches with a seating capacity of 173 people and a total capacity of 700 commuters.
The Meerut Metro project has an integrated ticketing system that enables commuters to travel on both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro using the same ticket. This is a unique system where both metro rails will run on the same infrastructure in the city, making Meerut one of the few cities in the world to have such a system.
The stations have also been designed with special needs such as a space marked for stretchers and wheelchairs, along with elevators to provide easy access to senior citizens traveling to Delhi for medical assistance.
With this new development, faster connectivity is expected to make traveling from Meerut to Delhi easier for working professionals and businesses alike.
With travel time under an hour, this route is expected to reduce congestion on highways and increase productivity in the region. The metro system in Meerut is also expected to increase mobility in the region.
