Past incidents
Such incidents have happened in the past here. In fact, last month only a massive landslide occurred along the Har Ki Pauri–Bhimgoda stretch. The landslide’s CCTV footage showed huge big boulders crashing down on a motorcyclist, who narrowly escaped with minor injuries. These incidents have raised concerns about the safety of the hill.
About Mansa Devi hill
The Mansa Devi hill is one of the most famous temples visited by lakhs of pilgrims. It has long been prone to landslides, especially during the monsoon. Authorities had installed safety barriers and nets last year to reduce risks, but the repeated collapses suggest that these measures may not be enough to withstand the increasing intensity of natural hazards. Experts believe that relentless rainfall in Uttarakhand this season has weakened the slopes, making them highly unstable.
But given the heavy rains this year, several landslides across the hill state have been reported, causing traffic disruptions, property damage, and heightened risk to lives. The situation has highlighted the urgent need for stronger preventive infrastructure and better monitoring systems in vulnerable regions.
As of now, railway officials are focused on clearing the blocked track so that services can safely resume. Local residents, pilgrims, and commuters are being urged to avoid unnecessary travel.
The landslide at Mansa Devi is just another example of growing challenges posed by weather, especially during the monsoon. While authorities continue their restoration work, the incident has sparked wider discussions on long-term safety measures and the need to protect both lives and livelihoods in the state’s sensitive hill regions.
