India plans its first offshore airport near Mumbai - key details here
India is set to develop its first offshore airport near Mumbai, marking a significant step in aviation. As per the reports, the proposed Vadhvan Airport will be constructed on an artificial island near the Vadhvan seaport on the country’s west coast, drawing inspiration from internationally renowned offshore airports such as Hong Kong International Airport and Osaka’s Kansai International Airport.
The project recently secured initial approvals from India’s environment and defense ministries, along with the Maharashtra state government. Feasibility studies will be conducted with assistance from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), after which an investment estimate will be finalized.
Located approximately 125 km from Mumbai’s existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), the Vadhvan airport is an ambitious project that aligns with India’s goal of expanding air connectivity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously hinted at the commencement of the project during an election rally in Maharashtra.

In addition to the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), which is presently being built, the Vadhvan Airport will be Mumbai's third major aviation centre. The project's components to improve connection are:
Integration with the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor, which will feature a stop near the airport.
Connectivity to key expressways, including the New Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and the Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway, ensuring faster access for travelers.
Although analysts express worries over passenger demand and economic viability, the offshore airport seeks to relieve congestion in Mumbai's aviation industry. It's unclear if Vadhvan Airport will draw enough travellers and airlines given that new airports in smaller communities have had trouble sustaining high traffic numbers.

With millions of passengers passing through each year, Mumbai's existing CSMIA is one of India's busiest international airports. The goal of the soon-to-open Navi Mumbai International Airport is to improve regional aviation connections and reduce traffic. When Vadhvan Airport is finished, it will further solidify Mumbai's standing as a major international aviation centre and offer a sustainable response to the increasing demand for air travel.
With strategic location advantages and strong government backing, India’s first offshore airport could reshape the country’s aviation landscape, provided it secures sufficient airline participation and traveler demand.
