The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued escalating alerts for Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring coastal regions, warning of potential flooding, rough seas, and strong winds. Cyclone Montha, currently swirling over the Bay of Bengal, is expected to make landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, on the evening or night of October 28.
According to the IMD bulletin, Montha is classified as a “severe cyclonic storm” with maximum sustained wind speeds of 90–100 km/h, gusting up to 110 km/h. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected across coastal Andhra Pradesh, with the possibility of isolated extremely heavy downpours in some districts.
The state government has moved swiftly into action. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to remain on high alert, deploy disaster response teams, and coordinate evacuation and relief efforts. Thousands of residents from low-lying coastal areas have already been relocated to safer zones, and relief camps are being readied across affected districts.
Authorities have also issued strong advisories for tourists and residents. Beaches in Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, and Machilipatnam have been closed, and all boat rides and water sports suspended. Travellers are urged to avoid coastal and riverfront areas as the sea remains extremely rough, with the risk of storm surges inundating vulnerable areas.

Transportation services, including trains and flights, are likely to continue facing disruptions. Passengers are advised to check schedules and stay updated via the IMD’s official website and state disaster management bulletins.
As Cyclone Montha nears landfall, the next 24 hours are critical. With high winds, torrential rain, and flooding risks, officials emphasize that public cooperation and adherence to safety advisories remain essential until the storm passes.
