The new and much-needed move will benefit the travellers and devotees heading to the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The price cut follows several meetings between the government and airlines to manage soaring airfare costs. The move will ensure that travellers can reach the city at more affordable rates.

As per reports, the Mahakumbh Mela 2025 has seen a sharp increase in air travel demand, on routes to Prayagraj. The airfares had surged dramatically on the route from across the country. To put a cap on this, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) previously directed airlines to adjust ticket prices.

Not only this, the government added 81 extra flights in January to nearly 132, with capacity expanded to nearly 80,000 seats per month. This increase in flight availability has led to a significant drop in prices. For example, the cost of flights from Delhi to Prayagraj, which previously reached INR 29,000, has now fallen to around INR 10,000 on average.

Who will be benefited?
It is expected that the new changes will have an effect on a wide range of travellers, especially pilgrims attending the Mahakumbh Mela. This religious event, one of the largest in the world, attracts crores of people, and many are now able to book flights at lower costs due to the increased number of available seats.

Also, visitors will see improved connectivity with new direct flights from major cities like Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Bengaluru. With peak bathing dates approaching, including February 3, 4, 12, and 26, the government's measures aim to accommodate incoming visitors.

The air price cuts will also benefit airlines by ensuring they are not financially burdened by the reduced fares. Despite the lower ticket prices, the government has worked to ensure that airlines remain financially stable. Overall, the 50% airfare cut is designed to benefit the millions of pilgrims attending the Mahakumbh Mela, while balancing affordability and airline sustainability.
