Nestled in the southern reaches of Laos, along the mighty Mekong River, Khone Phapheng Falls is what nature's raw power looks and sounds like. The thunderous roar of this waterfall can be heard from a great distance. But what's so special about this waterfall? Locals call it Khone Falls or Phapheng Falls. This cascading wonder is the widest waterfall on the planet, spanning an astonishing average width of 10,783 meters.
Where is Khone Phapheng Falls?
Khone Phapheng Falls is located in Champasak Province near the Cambodian border. This waterfall system is a part of the larger Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands) archipelago. This is where the Mekong River splits into a labyrinth of channels and islets.
Khone Phapheng Falls is 10,783 meters wide or approximately 6.7 miles, making it nit only the widest waterfall in the world but also a geological marvel. Khone Phapheng Falls is made up of a series of rapids, cascades, and cataracts stretching over 9.7 to 10 kilometers along the river's length. The main drop reaches about 14 to 21 meters in height. What truly sets it apart is its volume: the falls discharge an average of 11,000 cubic meters of water per second. But during peak flow, the volume goes up to even 50,000 cubic meters.
For the locals, Khone Phapheng Falls is not just a big waterfall and a popular tourist spot. For them, the falls is of cultural importance as for generations they have revered the Mekong as a life-giving force. The name "Khone Phapheng" derives from Lao words meaning "the falls that roar like a lion.”
What’s in it for tourists?
This is one of the most popular tourist spots in the region, and rightfully so. People from all over come to see this natural wonder and marvel at its sheer size. There are viewing platforms, walkways, and informational signs, allowing visitors to admire the falls from multiple vantage points and from a safe distance. Entry fee is typically around 50,000 Lao Kip (INR 203), and this fee includes access to a small museum and electric shuttle service for those with mobility needs.
The waterfall is accessible by bus or boat from major hubs like Vientiane or Siem Reap in Cambodia. While visiting Khone Falls, visit nearby attractions like Li Phi Falls or go for dolphin-watching tours on the Mekong. For the adventurous travellers, for a more up-close-and-personal experience, go for a boat tour. The boat ride gives a close-up view of the rapids. For safety reasons, swimming is strictly prohibited.
The best time to visit is during the dry season when water levels are lower, reducing the risk of flooding and improving visibility. Accommodations range from budget guesthouses on the islands to eco-lodges in Pakse.
