Where to witness the most spectacular Janmashtami celebrations in India

Janmashtami is celebrated all over India with great energy and love and marks the birth of Lord Krishna. This festival is celebrated with great happiness and brings everyone together through devotion, music, dance, and rich culture. While it is celebrated all over India, there are some destinations that have unique ways of celebrating the occasion. Visiting them during Janmashtami offers not just an experience, but an unforgettable immersion into India’s living heritage, spirituality, and community spirit.

Let’s look at the places you can visit:

2/6

Mathura, Uttar Pradesh

This place is the birthplace of Lord Krishna and is also the place where Janmashtami is celebrated with great enthusiasm. The Krishna Janmasthan Temple Complex is considered the place where Lord Krishna was born, and many rituals are carried out on this day to celebrate this happy occassion like midnight abhishekam (ritual bathing of the idol), devotional songs, dance performances, and aartis. Other important sites include the Dwarkadheesh Temple and Vishram Ghat on the Yamuna River, where Krishna is said to have rested after defeating the tyrant Kamsa. Devotees generally observe a fast and break it at midnight when Lord Krishna was believed to have been born.

3/6

Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh

Vrindavan is also the place where Lord Krishna spent his childhood. It hosts vibrant Janmashtami events across numerous temples, including the iconic Banke Bihari Temple and ISKCON Vrindavan. To celebrate the day, a lot of kirtans, flower decorations, and drama enactments of the deity’s life known as Raas Leela are held all over Vrindavan. There is a different kind of joy throughout the town, making it a must-visit place to witness the immersive celebrations of Krishna’s birth.

4/6

Gokul, Uttar Pradesh

Gokul celebrates Janmashtami with its own unique local customs. This is the place where Lord Krishna spent his infancy. The celebrations of Janmashtami take place here a day later. They celebrate the day by performing a sacred ritual of pouring holy water, milk, and nectar over the idol of Krishna, symbolising the divine's presence and purity. This place greatly depicts the early life of the deity in a village setting surrounded by nature.

5/6

Dwarka, Gujarat

This was an ancient kingdom of Lord Krishna where grand festivities are held around the Dwarkadhish Temple. The temple is beautifully decorated, with an early morning aarti which attracts a lot of devotees. One must visit this place to witness the holy aarti and celebrations. Here, the devotees observe fasting, prayers, and cultural programs in honor of Krishna. This place has great historical and religious significance, which adds to the spiritual celebrations.

6/6

Mumbai, Maharashtra

Mumbai is known for having electric energy in the air during the time of Janmashtami. The unique ‘Dahi Handi’ festival is conducted here, which involves forming human pyramids to break clay pots filled with butter placed at a height. This tradition depicts the playful nature of Lord Krishna. Other than this tradition, temples conduct many traditional rituals and festivities. It is a great spectacle to be witnessed at the time of celebration by everyone.
