It is so popular the Park Service limits access through a lottery and vehicle reservation system to protect insects and habitat.

Congaree’s is another famous park to spot fireflies. The park holds a Synchronous Firefly Viewing Event (between May and June). This is also a lottery system based event. Unlike open-population viewing, Congaree’s event structure helps limit disturbance to the forest-floor habitat where fireflies mate and larvae develop.

Indiana Dunes National Park is also a place to watch fireflies. Evening walks near Cowles Bog, Great Marsh or the park’s offer good sightings in summer. The park’s mix of shorelines and interior wetlands gives opportunities for quieter, low-impact viewing away from the big, ticketed events. Always check park alerts and leave no trace.

Assateague is another famous place to witness fireflies. It is also the spot to witness wild horses and salt marshes. It also records the Bethany Beach firefly species in the region. Coastal parks with intact marshes, dunes and maritime forest can host fireflies that rely on dark, undisturbed habitats; these places are important for species that aren’t widespread inland. Because coastal ecosystems are especially vulnerable to sea-level and climate change, responsible visitation matters.

Shenandoah’s meadows and forest edges light up in summer: many visitors and park programs report healthy firefly activity along Skyline Drive and in lower-elevation meadows. The park occasionally runs nighttime programs or ranger-led walks focused on these insects. Because Shenandoah is relatively close to urban centers, choose darker reaches of the park and avoid bringing bright lights that could disturb mating signals.
