Big cats are probably one of the most fascinating creatures roaming on Earth! These animals have both impressed and intrigued humans for centuries now with their power, beauty, grace, and mystique. The big cats are also apex predators that play an important role in maintaining the health of ecosystems.

Tiger

Where to spot: India, Nepal, Russia, Indonesia, China
The largest big cat, tigers are noted for their striking orange coats with black stripes. These beautiful creatures can mostly be spotted in India, Nepal, Russia and Indonesia with India alone accounting for more than 70% of the world’s wild tiger population. Bandhavgarh, Ranthambhore, and Jim Corbett National Park are some of the best places to spot tigers in India. Some of the endangered species include the Amur tiger.

Lion

Where to spot: Tanzania, Kenya, Botswana, South Africa, Gir Forest in India
The only big cats that live in social groups are lions. These powerful predators dominate the African savannahs, Kalahari Desert in Botswana and India’s Gir forest. The Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and Maasai Mara in Kenya offer some majestic lion sightings. If you plan a visit during the Great Migration, you might spot lions in their natural habitat.

Cheetah

Where to spot: Namibia, Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana
The fastest land animals, cheetahs are capable of reaching speeds up to 70 mph in a short leap! These beautiful creatures rely on speed rather than stealth or strength. Namibia’s NamibRand Nature Reserve and Kenya’s Masai Mara are best places to spot cheetahs in action.

Snow Leopard

Where to spot: India, Nepal, Bhutan, Mongolia
Spotting a snow leopard is a rare phenomenon. These creatures live in the cold snowy mountains of Central Asia. With thick fur, they are well adapted to high altitudes. Sightings have been reported in Hemis National Park in India and Shey Phoksundo National Park in Nepal.

Leopard

Where to spot: South Africa, Sri Lanka, India, Namibia
Leopards can adapt to any situation and are commonly sighted across sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia. With a spotted coat, these creatures are excellent climbers and can often be seen relaxing on trees. Yala National Park in Sri Lanka offers some amazing opportunities to spot leopards as the density of leopards is quite high.

Where to spot: Brazil, Belize, Mexico
Jaguar is native to the Americas and is the third-largest big cat species in the world. The apex predator of the Amazon Rainforest are excellent swimmers and often hunt aquatic animals. The Pantanal Wetlands in Brazil offer the best chances to see jaguars in the wild.
