Spotted: Top 10 places to see leopards in India

Leopards steal the spotlight in most cases, although they don’t roar or strut. These are the most elusive jungle cats that aren’t out there to impress with theatrics like lions or flex their dominance like tigers. They prefer to ghost through the trees, crash city fringes, or casually nap on a branch, which you might get to spot in any of these national parks if you are lucky. So, If you're dreaming to spot one of them in their stealth action, here are 10 wild places in India where leopards love to play hide and peek-a-boo.

2/11

Jhalana Leopard Safari Park, Rajasthan

This urban jungle in Jaipur is India’s first leopard reserve, and is home to more than 30 leopards. Packed into a relatively small area, your chances of a sighting here are ridiculously high, even in broad daylight. Also, it’s just 30 minutes from Jaipur city, so you can go from palace-hopping to panther-watching in the same day.

3/11

Bera, Rajasthan

Welcome to leopard country with a twist, Bera is all rocky outcrops, dusty scrublands, and ancient temples. The big cat here shares space with shepherds and villagers like a polite neighbor. You won’t find a formal sanctuary here, but you will find some of India’s most spectacular leopard sightings, and you will love every bit of it.

4/11

Jawai, Rajasthan

Right next to Bera, you will find this unique place, Jawai. Here, you will be surprised to see these shy big cats roaming freely among granite hills. It's wild, remote, and photogenically feline. Plus, you might just spot leopards and shepherds sharing the same mountain slope.

5/11

Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Mumbai, Maharashtra

Yes, the leopard activity that you might have heard about Mumbai is very real. Sanjay Gandhi NP, located within city limits, is home to over 30 leopards. They’ve adapted brilliantly to urban life. Morning treks through the park can offer thrilling sightings, especially near the Tulsi and Vihar lake regions.

6/11

Kabini, Karnataka

Tucked along the banks of the Kabini River, this part of Nagarhole National Park is leopard and black panther territory. While tigers are the headliners here, leopards regularly make scene-stealing appearances—especially slinking across open tracks during dawn and dusk safaris.

7/11

Satpura National Park, Madhya Pradesh

Satpura is the underdog of Indian national parks, less crowded, more raw, and leopard-rich. The landscape is all rugged hills, dense forests, and misty valleys where leopards like to play hide and seek. Opt for walking or canoe safaris here for a next-level “wild” experience.

8/11

Panna National Park, Madhya Pradesh

Once tiger territory, Panna is now a leopard-lover’s delight. The absence of big cats in the past meant leopards flourished here, and even after tiger reintroduction, they continue to reign. Think majestic cats draped over rocks or darting across the Ken River gorge like ghostly shadows.

9/11

Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh-Maharashtra

While Rudyard Kipling made this jungle famous for its tiger, Pench is actually a great spot for leopards too. With thick forest cover and a healthy prey base, Pench offers frequent daytime sightings—especially in the buffer zones. Plus, the scenery is straight out of a jungle fairytale.

10/11

Sariska Tiger Reserve, Rajasthan

Sariska is where leopards rule the roost. While tiger sightings are rare here, you might get lucky and spot a leopard here, particularly during early morning safaris near the hilly terrains of Pandupol and Tehla.

11/11

Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra

Tigers may be in the spotlight here, but leopards in Tadoba are not shy about stealing that attention. You’ll often spot them lounging in trees or stalking langurs in the buffer zones. Night safaris here? Absolutely worth it every single time.
