Seven summits: the highest mountains in the world

Climbing the highest peak on each continent is one of the most iconic challenges in the world of mountaineering. Popularly known as the ‘Seven Summits’, these mountains test the limits of people’s skill, endurance, and courage. While there may be varied opinions as to which top mountain peaks make it to the list, each gives a special adventure, scenic views, and unforgettable experiences for a lifetime.

Here is a list of the seven tallest mountain peaks in the world.

2/8

Asia - Mount Everest

Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain at 29,035 feet (8,850 meters), sits on the Nepal-Tibet border. It was first climbed in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, and ever since then, Everest has become the ultimate goal for many climbers, despite its dangerous conditions.

3/8

South America - Mount Aconcagua

Mount Aconcagua, the highest mountain in South America and the Western Hemisphere, stands at 22,831 feet (6,959 meters). Located in Argentina near Chile’s border, it is a favourite among climbers for its majestic height and accessibility compared to other towering peaks.

4/8

North America - Denali

Denali, located in Alaska, is the tallest mountain in North America at 20,310 feet (6,190 meters). Popular for its extreme weather and challenging trekking, Denali was first summited in 1913. Its sheer rise from the surrounding landscape makes it one of the most impressive peaks globally.

5/8

Africa - Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain, is a majestic volcanic massif in Tanzania. Its highest peak, Kibo, is nearly 19,340 feet (5,895 meters) high. Known for its diverse ecosystems, Kilimanjaro gives climbers a unique trek through forests, alpine meadows, and glaciers. It was first summited in 1889 and remains a popular adventure today.

6/8

Europe - Mount Elbrus

Mount Elbrus is Europe’s highest peak, standing at 18,510 feet (5,642 meters). This dormant volcano in Russia’s Caucasus Mountains has twin cones covered by glaciers. First climbed in 1874, it attracts mountaineers with its sturdy slopes and panoramic views, despite ongoing debate about Europe’s continental boundaries.

7/8

Antarctica - Vinson Massif

Vinson Massif is Antarctica’s highest peak, rising to 16,050 feet (4,892 meters). Discovered in 1935, its remote location and extreme cold make it a formidable challenge. First climbed in 1966, Vinson is the perfect spot for breathtaking views of the icy continent for those who reach its summit.

8/8

Australia and Oceania - Jaya Peak and Mount Kosciuszko

Jaya Peak (Mount Carstensz) in New Guinea rises to 16,024 feet (4,884 meters), making it the highest island peak with rugged terrain and glaciers. Mount Kosciuszko, the highest peak on mainland Australia, is much shorter at 7,310 feet (2,228 meters).
