Richard Gere in Dharamshala for Dalai Lama’s birthday: 5 more reasons to visit this Himalayan gem right now

Dharamshala, the scenic hill town in Himachal Pradesh, is currently the epicentre of global spiritual energy, and it’s not because of its mountains. Hollywood actor Richard Gere landed here this week to join in the celebrations for the upcoming 90th birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama, and he’s not the only one making the pilgrimage.

While the Dalai Lama’s birthday falls on July 6 as per the Gregorian calendar, festivities kicked off early, on June 30, in line with the Tibetan lunar calendar. Monks, scholars, international leaders, and well-wishers from around the world have been flocking to McLeod Ganj and the surrounding Kangra region to participate in what’s shaping up to be one of the most significant spiritual gatherings in recent memory.

But beyond the ceremonies and chants lies a deeper significance for travellers: Dharamshala right now is a living, breathing place of history, culture, spirituality, and natural wonder. And here’s why this is the perfect moment to visit. (Photo credit: Instagram @actor_richardgere)

A once-in-a-decade spiritual celebration

The town has transformed into a stage for interfaith dialogue, traditional rituals, and heartfelt tributes, as the Dalai Lama turning 90 is a global event. On June 30, at Nechung Monastery, Richard Gere spoke to ANI and shared his personal connection to the region: “We’re here in Dharamshala to celebrate His Holiness’s 90th birthday, his good health, his strength and compassion.”
He even recalled how the Nechung Monastery holds deep meaning for him and his son, adding, “It’s always a delight being here.” During the visit, a sacred ritual was performed at the Nechung Monastery, the Nechung Oracle, one of Tibetan Buddhism’s protector deities, who blessed the Central Tibetan Administration, a rare event few outsiders ever witness. The 3-day program

If you think Dharamshala is just a sleepy Himalayan town, think again. This week, it’s hosting a three-day international Buddhist conference (July 2–4) that will see senior monks, academics, and spiritual thinkers coming together. The culmination? A much-anticipated address by the Dalai Lama on the future of the Tibetan reincarnation tradition, a topic with global political and spiritual implications. (Canva)

Panoramic vistas and pine-scented serenity

Of course, you’re still in Himachal. The Triund trek, views of the Dhauladhar ranges, and peaceful monasteries scattered through pine forests give Dharamshala its postcard-perfect setting. Whether it’s sipping butter tea while clouds roll over Namgyal Monastery, or reading in a hillside café in McLeod Ganj, the blend of natural beauty and mindful stillness here is unmatched. (Canva)

A cultural melting pot

Dharamshala’s birthday celebrations have drawn everyone from Richard Gere to Swami Chidanand Saraswati, Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati, and Jain Acharya Lokesh Muni. Their messages have resonated across faiths — advocating compassion, peace, dialogue, and non-violence. In a world often divided by belief, Dharamshala is, for now, a rare crossroads of global conscience. (Canva)

Meaningful encounters beyond the selfie

Whether it’s the echo of chanting monks, a Tibetan spinning a prayer wheel, or Gere talking about compassion, Dharamshala leaves its mark in subtle but lasting ways. As Sadhvi Bhagawati put it, “He [the Dalai Lama] has taught us that even amidst hurt, one can still choose love, forgiveness, and truth.” (Canva)

The celebrations are just getting started

Couldn’t make it to the hills? Worry not. On July 13, the International Buddhist Confederation will host a commemorative event in New Delhi, carrying forward the spiritual tide sparked in Dharamshala. But if you’re seeking peace, purpose, and mountain air, now’s the time to head north. (Canva)
