‘Panch Kedar’ temples of Uttarakhand: A sacred pilgrimage through the Garhwal Himalayas

Uttarakhand, the ‘Land of the Gods,’ is famous for being home to some of the most revered temples in India. The Panch Kedar refers to the five ancient temples of Lord Shiva that are scattered across the Garhwal Himalayas. These temples are Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar and Kalpeshwar.
Each of these temples are dedicated to a body part of Lord Shiva and hold immense religious significance. The Panch Kedar temples are also cultural landmarks that are steeped in legends. The pilgrimage offers a unique blend of mythology, natural beauty, adventure and spirituality. It is a sojourn that takes devotees through the sacred temples set in the Garhwal Himalayas.
The Panch Kedar Yatra is a pilgrimage that takes travellers through the Garhwal Himalayas, covering a distance of approximately 107 kilometers. The best time to undertake the Panch Kedar Yatra is during the months of May, June, September, and October.
Now let’s have a look at the five temples:

2/6

Kedarnath: Hump of the Bull

Kedarnath needs no introduction. This temple is also a part of the Char Dham Yatra that Hindus undertake and has immense significance. Set at an altitude of 3,583 meters, Kedarnath is also a part of Panch Kedars. Legend has it that during the Mahabharata era, the Pandavas came here to seek Shiva's blessings to atone for their sins. Shiva came here and transformed into a bull and when Bhima attempted to catch the bull, it vanished into the ground and left its hump here. The temple is also one the 12 Jyotilingas spread across India.

The temple can be reached via a 16–18 km trek from Gaurikund.

3/6

Tungnath: Arms of Shiva

Tungnath is the highest Shiva temple in the world set at an altitude of 3,680 meters. Tungnath means ‘Lord of the Peaks’ and as per Hindu mythology, after the bull vanished at Kedarnath, Shiva’s other parts started appearing at several locations across the hills. It is said that his arms manifested here at Tungnath.

Reaching the temple is quite a task but the journey is certainly rewarding. It is accessible via a 3.5 km trek from Chopta.

4/6

Rudranath: Face of Shiva

It is believed that Rudranath is the place where Shiva’s face appeared. Set at 2,286 meters, the temple is on the fourth spot in the Panch Kedar circuit and is considered unique because it does not have a traditional Shiva Lingam. Instead, people pray to a natural rock formation which looks like the face of Shiva. It’s an unsolved mystery!

Rudranath is accessible via a difficult 20 km trek from Sagar or Lyuti Bugyal. It is considered the most challenging trek in the circuit.

5/6

Madhyamaheshwar: Navel of Shiva

Madhyamaheshwar is believed to be the place where Shiva’s navel or nabhi manifested. Set at an altitude of 3,497 meters in the Gaundar village of Rudraprayag district, the temple can be reached via an 18 km long trek from Ransi village. The present temple enshrines a navel-shaped Shiva Lingam in black stone.

6/6

Kalpeshwar: Hair of Shiva

Kalpeshwar is the fifth and last of the Panch Kedars. The temple is set at an elevation of 2,200 meters in the Urgam Valley. This temple can be reached anytime of the year via a short 300-meter trek from Devgram village. It is also considered unique as the temple enshrines hair (jata) of Lord Shiva. People visit here from near and far to get a glimpse of the unique revered hair in the temple.

To reach the temple, one has to pass through a cave passage, which adds a sense of mystique.
