Not just lions and safaris: Africa will surprise you with these 5 stereotype-busting facts

Africa often gets crammed into neat little stereotypes, safaris, deserts, pyramids, and maybe a lion or two roaring in the popular national parks. But beyond the postcard clichés lies a continent that’s quirky, astonishing, and full of facts that’ll make your jaw drop. Ready to unlearn what you thought you knew? Here are five lesser-known facts about African countries that prove the continent is full of surprises.

2/6

Ethiopia was never really colonised

Ethiopia proudly holds the title of Africa’s oldest independent nation. Aside from a brief five-year occupation by Mussolini’s Italy during WWII, it was never colonised. Italy made two ambitious attempts—most famously in 1896 at the Battle of Adwa—but Ethiopia firmly shut the door both times. Its legacy of resistance isn’t just historic; it’s iconic.
But wait, Ethiopia isn’t just historically fierce, it’s also delightfully unconventional too. The country runs on its own calendar (currently about seven years behind the rest of the world), speaks in its own alphabet, and tells time in a completely different way, where the day starts at sunrise, not midnight.

Liberia: founded by freed slaves, named after freedom

Ever wondered what happens when a group of freed African-American slaves sails back across the Atlantic to start fresh? Welcome to Liberia—the only African country founded by former slaves from the US in the early 1800s. The country’s name literally means “land of the free,” and its flag resembles a one-star version of the Stars and Stripes.
Monrovia, the capital, is named after US President James Monroe. It’s one of the few places where American history and African heritage intersect in such a dramatic and tangible way.

4/6

Eswatini: The country that rebranded itself

In 2018, King Mswati III decided to change the name of Swaziland to Eswatini, citing a common reason: people kept confusing it with Switzerland. Relatable, right?
But here’s the real kicker—Eswatini is also one of Africa's last absolute monarchies. The king doesn’t just cut ribbons; he makes major national decisions.

5/6

Morocco is home to the world’s oldest operating university

Think Oxford or Harvard are the oldest universities in the world? Think again. The University of al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, Morocco, holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s oldest continuously operating degree-granting university. It was founded in 859 AD—by a woman, Fatima al-Fihri.
Long before Europe got its academic groove on, scholars from all over the Islamic world and beyond were gathering here to study theology, astronomy, law, and more. It’s a reminder that Africa has been a hub of learning and innovation for over a millennium.

6/6

Sudan has more pyramids than Egypt

Yes, you read that right. Egypt may have the fame, but Sudan quietly holds the crown for the most pyramids in the world, over 200 of them, compared to Egypt’s roughly 130. Most of these are located in the ancient city of Meroë, built by the Kingdom of Kush, a powerful civilization that thrived along the Nile.
These pyramids are smaller and steeper than the Egyptian ones, but just as impressive and historically rich. The best part? You can visit them without the crowd disturbing you.
