From world’s largest seed to hidden pirate treasure, 8 facts that make this island nation in Indian Ocean truly unique

When it comes to travel, Seychelles is often seen primarily as a romantic getaway for couples or a destination for leisurely vacations. Also, the first pictures that come to mind are powdery beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and luxurious resorts snuggled between swaying palms. So, to suppose this island nation, dispersed over the Indian Ocean, is far more than a tropical postcard, could come as a surprise for many. Well, like any place has its unique personality, Seychelles also has some hidden secrets beyond its sun-soaked shores that are astonishing natural beauties, unusual species, and stories that make the islands a playground for the curious traveler. It’s a place where the ordinary is remarkable, and the extraordinary, plain unbelievable. Find out more here.

Coco de Mer — The world’s heaviest seed

Perhaps the most famous of Seychelles’ botanical oddities is the Coco de Mer. This enormous palm produces a seed so large it can weigh up to 30 kg, earning it the title of the heaviest seed in the world. Found only on the islands of Praslin and Curieuse, the Coco de Mer is instantly recognisable for its suggestive, double-lobed shape. Ancient sailors believed it had mystical powers, and today it continues to fascinate botanists and visitors alike. Walking through the palm forests of Praslin, spotting the enormous nuts on the forest floor is an experience unlike any other, which also serves as a reminder that nature sometimes has a sense of humor.

3/9

Pirate legends and hidden treasure

Long before Seychelles became a luxury getaway, it was a haven for pirates. Tales abound of hidden coves, secret hideouts, and treasures buried along the jagged coastline. While most of these stories belong to the realm of legend, the islands’ rugged terrain and secluded bays make it easy to imagine a swashbuckling figure stashing gold and jewels just out of sight. Some adventurous travellers even enjoy hunting for clues or exploring the islands with a sense of romantic daring, following the footsteps of pirates who roamed these waters centuries ago.

4/9

Aldabra Atoll — Home of the giant tortoises

Seychelles is also home to Aldabra Atoll, one of the world’s largest coral atolls, and a sanctuary for giant tortoises. These slow-moving reptiles can live for over a century, and their presence gives the atoll a prehistoric vibe. Walking among them, watching the enormous creatures graze lazily under the tropical sun, it’s easy to imagine stepping back in time. Aldabra is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its isolation has helped preserve a fragile ecosystem that continues to inspire biologists and travelers alike.

5/9

Seychelles black parrot — A rare feathered resident

The Seychelles Black Parrot is a very rare gem for avian enthusiasts. This remarkable and enigmatic parrot is only found on the little island of Praslin. Sightings are rare due to its scarcity, and seeing one in the wild is an exhilarating experience. Conservation efforts have ensured that this unusual species continues to live, adding yet another layer of wonder to Seychelles’ natural legacy.

6/9

Ancient granite islands

While the white sand and turquoise lagoons are the highlights of this destination, the islands themselves are a geological marvel. Many of Seychelles’ granite islands are fragments of Earth’s crust that predate the dinosaurs. These ancient formations rise dramatically from the sea, creating dramatic cliffs, secluded coves, and sculpted rock formations that look like art created by the hands of time itself. Hiking or kayaking around these granite giants reveals a landscape that feels both timeless and alive.

7/9

No indigenous inhabitants

It's interesting to note that Seychelles never had any native inhabitants. The islands were completely uninhabited until the late 18th century, while the first settlers arrived around the 1770s, making it a relatively young nation in terms of human history. Do note that because everyone’s ancestors came from Africa, Europe, and Asia, the islands developed a rich cultural mix. Seychellois Creole (Seselwa), a melodic French-based Creole, became the mother tongue, while today Creole, English, and French all serve as official languages. One can see the impact of this fusion of influences in Seychelles’ music, dance, and cuisine, creating a warm, diverse culture that greets visitors with open arms.

8/9

More water than land

Seychelles is more than just a collection of islands. It’s a nation defined by the vast ocean that surrounds them. Covering around 1.4 million km², only 459 km² is land, which means more than 99% of the country is water! This makes Seychelles a true ocean nation, where vibrant marine life thrives beneath the waves. One can dive into its crystal-clear waters to discover coral reefs which are teeming with tropical fish, graceful sea turtles, and even majestic manta rays. Conservation also is taken seriously here, whereas nearly half of Seychelles’ land area is protected as national parks and nature reserves, while marine parks safeguard underwater ecosystems.

9/9

The Leper Colony

Curieuse Island, which is now a beautiful national park, once used to serve as a leper colony in the 19th century. The remnants of the old doctor’s house and leprosarium are still visible amid the palm groves.
