From Unity to Devotion: Exploring Asia's 5 Tallest Statues

Statues stand as symbols of heritage, religious devotion, and historical memory. One can find a lot of statues around the world that attract millions of visitors and that reflect the artistic, spiritual, and engineering achievements of the creators. Most of these statues are of great leaders, deities, or depict ideals, and each statue has a unique story and holds great significance.

Today, we’ll look at some of the tallest statues in the world that will definitely keep you intrigued:

Statue of Unity (India)

Topping the list is the Statue of Unity that stands at a height of 182 meters and is located near Kevadia of Gujarat. This statue is the tallest in the world and is dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of independent India. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was famously known as ‘The Iron Man of India,’ and he also played a great role in the unification of the country. This statue is located on a river island called Sadhu Bet along the Narmada Dam. The Statue of Unity was inaugurated in October 2018.

Spring Temple Buddha (China)

In the second position on the list is the Spring Temple Buddha, which stands at a height of 208 meters (including the pedestal). It is located in the Fodushan Scenic Area of Lushan County in China. This statue was completed in 2008 and was the tallest statue in the world until the Statue of Unity surpassed it. This temple Buddha statue depicts a Vairocana statue. It is made of copper cast and is placed on a lotus throne and a pedestal that makes it even more majestic. The Spring Temple Buddha derives its name from the nearby Tianrui hot spring.

Laykyun Sekkya Buddha (Myanmar)

The third tallest statue in the world stands at a height of 129.2 meters (with base). This statue is located in the Khatakan Taung village, near Monywa, Sagaing Region of Myanmar. This statue depicts a standing Gautam Buddha and was constructed from 1996 to 2008. It was commissioned by the Chief Abbot Ven and was the tallest statue in the world for a few months until the completion of the Spring Temple Buddha in September 2008. The Laykyun Sekkya statue depicts a standing Gautama Buddha next to a reclining statue of Gautama Buddha, depicting the scene of Mahaparinirvana.

Vishwas Swaroopam (India)

Vishwas Swaroopam took the fourth position on the tallest statues list. It stands at a height of 112 meters and is located in Ganesh Tekri, Nathdwara of Rajasthan. This is also known as the tallest statue of Lord Shiva in the world. This statue is positioned on top of a hill and is easily visible even from a long distance. This statue has exhibition halls and galleries that help the visitors learn about Hindu mythology and Lord Shiva’s significance. This statue is an architectural marvel and also holds great cultural significance.

Ushiku Daibutsu (Japan)

This statue is the fifth tallest statue in the world with a height of 120 meters (including the base and lotus). It is located in Ushiku, Ibaraki Prefecture of Japan. This statue depicts Amitabha Buddha (Amida Buddha) and was also the tallest statue in the world until 2008. It is made of bronze and has an internal observational deck that provides panoramic views along with a museum and a large Buddha Garden surrounding it. This statue is a famous cultural and religious spot.
