From Tokyo to Mumbai: Top 10 largest cities in the world by population

The world’s biggest cities have grown into massive megacities, shaping global culture, migration, and economic influence. Meanwhile, a rise in population has also been witnessed in these cities. If we go by the numbers of World Population Review, several urban areas now have populations crossing 20–30 million. Here is a look at 10 of the most populated cities in the world today, and find out where Delhi and Mumbai are placed. (Data sourced from World Population Review).

2/11

Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo remains the world’s most populated city, with an estimated 37 million people. It is the largest urban agglomeration globally. Tokyo functions as Japan’s political, financial, and cultural center and is known for its high-density neighbourhoods, efficient transportation, and global economic significance. Its metropolitan spread and long-standing development have kept it at the top of global population rankings.

3/11

Delhi, India

Delhi comes in second with a population of around 34.67 million. Reasons are varied and many, like rapid urbanisation, migration from other places, expanding suburban zones, and others have contributed to its massive population growth. Also, Delhi serves as India’s capital and is a major hub for government, business, education, and transportation. So, there is no denying that the city continues to grow outward into the National Capital Region, creating one of the largest continuous urban areas in the world.

4/11

Shanghai, China

With approximately 30.48 million residents, Shanghai comes in third, and continues to be one of China’s largest and most influential cities. It has long been the country’s financial capital and a global trade and business center. Shanghai’s skyline, port activity, international corporate presence, and dense population reflect its role as an economic powerhouse within East Asia.

5/11

Dhaka, Bangladesh

Dhaka’s population is estimated at 24.65 million, which makes it one of the fastest-growing megacities worldwide. Migration from rural Bangladesh, coupled with its status as the nation’s political and economic center, has fueled its rapid expansion. The city is known for its garment industry, high-density living, and continuous urban sprawl.

6/11

Cairo, Egypt

Cairo has a population of around 23.07 million. As Egypt’s capital and one of Africa’s largest cities, Cairo is a central hub for political administration, culture, and economic activity. The city’s metropolitan region extends along the Nile River and remains one of the continent’s most significant urban centers in terms of size and influence.

7/11

São Paulo, Brazil

São Paulo, with an estimated 22.99 million residents, makes a mark in this list of 'most populated cities in the world.' It is widely recognized for its industrial and financial sectors and for being Brazil’s economic heart. The city’s population continues to grow as it attracts migrants from across the country and the region.

8/11

Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico City’s population stands at about 22.75 million, making it one of the most populated urban areas in the Western Hemisphere. It is the center of Mexico’s political, cultural, and economic life. Its large and diverse metropolitan area reflects centuries of development and migration patterns from across the nation.

9/11

Beijing, China

Beijing with a population of roughly 22.60 million, and as China’s political capital, sits in the 8th position. It's where the government institutions, historic sites, and a rapidly expanding technological and cultural sector is thriving. Beijing’s continued population growth reflects China’s broader economic rise and urban expansion.

10/11

Mumbai, India

Mumbai, reportedly, has an estimated 22.09 million residents. It is India’s financial capital and home to major industries, including finance, media, trade, and entertainment. Mumbai has been, and still continues to draw people from across India due to economic opportunities and remains one of the world’s largest coastal megacities.

11/11

Osaka, Japan

Osaka, along with its surrounding metropolitan region (including Kobe and Kyoto), has a population of around 19 million, placing it within the top global megacities. It is a major commercial and manufacturing hub, known for its port activity, industry, and strong economic influence within Japan.
