From Greece to Malta: Countries with the most lucrative Golden Visas and how to secure one

In an increasingly unpredictable world, golden visas have emerged as the ultimate insurance policy for high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs). These visas are the sleekest insurance policy money can buy. For the globe-trotting elite, they’re not just about skipping immigration queues, they’re passports to safer economies, smarter investments, and shinier lifestyles. Want the right to live, work, study, and stay healthy somewhere more stable? A golden visa hands you the keys, where no Plan B panic is required.
These residence-by-investment programs allow vetted investors to secure legal residence, and eventually citizenship, in countries offering greater economic, political, and lifestyle stability. Golden visas are not to be confused with citizenship-by-investment schemes. While the latter grants full citizenship rights (including a passport), golden visa programs typically start with residence rights and may lead to naturalization over time.
Here, we deep dive into the golden visa programs of six popular countries, and see what makes them tick. The list is based on insights from Henley & Partners’report. (Canva)

Greece

If your dream life involves sunsets over the Aegean and proximity to Europe’s Schengen Zone, Greece offers one of the most affordable golden visas in the EU. With a real estate investment starting at just EUR 250,000, Greece grants residence permits to non-EU nationals and their families, with no obligation to live there full-time.
Key benefits:
Visa-free travel across the Schengen Zone
The option to rent out investment property
Family inclusion: spouse, children under 21, and even parents
Citizenship eligibility after seven years
Besides real estate, investors can opt for time-share agreements, fixed deposits, or government bonds, though thresholds may vary by region.(Canva)

Portugal

If sipping port wine on a Lisbon rooftop while holding a golden visa sounds like your thing, Portugal’s Golden Residence Permit Program might just be your gateway. Designed for non-EU nationals, this five-year residence-by-investment scheme offers more than just Mediterranean charm; it serves as a launchpad to EU living with surprisingly relaxed residency requirements.
Minimum Investment: EUR 250,000
Star Perk: The right to live, work, and study in Portugal — and roam freely across the Schengen Zone
Why Portugal shines:
Visa-free travel across Schengen countries
Citizenship eligibility after five years — and you can keep your original passport
Low physical presence requirement (14 days in the first two years, 21 in the next three)
Access to top-tier international and local schools
Excellent healthcare and a famously high quality of life — sunshine, safety, seafood, and soul. (Canva)

4/8

Malta

Tiny but mighty, Malta’s Permanent Residence Programme is a regulated path to EU residency without the need to relocate full-time. The Mediterranean island offers solid infrastructure, favorable tax policies, and access to the Schengen Zone.
Minimum contribution: Around EUR 182,000 in mixed capital (real estate + donation + fees)
Notable perks:
No physical residence requirement
Family inclusion
Access to international schools and healthcare
Indefinite residence rights in Malta
It’s ideal for those seeking a second home base in Europe without the obligation to spend months onsite each year. (Canva)

5/8

Italy

Italy’s golden visa, officially called the Investor Visa for Italy, blends business opportunity with la dolce vita. From Milan’s financial district to Tuscany’s rolling vineyards, the program invites investors to pump capital into startups, public interest projects, or Italian government bonds.
Minimum investment: EUR 250,000 in innovative startups or up to EUR 2 million in government bonds
Standout features:
No mandatory residency
Path to citizenship after 10 years (under special conditions)
Residency within 90–120 days
A family-friendly policy with dependent inclusion
Alternatively, the Elective Residence Program is available for individuals with passive income who wish to settle in Italy without starting a business. (Canva)

6/8

Canada

Canada doesn't offer a traditional golden visa, instead, it provides a Start-Up Visa (SUV) Program. This pathway is perfect for entrepreneurial-minded individuals ready to launch or scale a business that can compete globally.
Investment: Between USD 215,000 to 275,000, depending on start-up type
Citizenship eligibility: Canada’s Start-Up Visa demands hands-on participation in a qualifying business — and launching one comes with a clear set of key milestones.
Under the Quebec Investor Immigration Program, applications are handled by the Quebec Government. The required investment is made only after approval is granted. Following the issuance of the work permit, applicants must spend at least 12 months in Quebec within a two-year period, with the main applicant completing a minimum of six months, and the remaining time fulfilled either by the applicant or their spouse.
To secure an initial work permit in Quebec, a pathway to permanent residence, applicants are required to meet two investment conditions: a five-year, interest-free investment of CAD 1 million guaranteed by the Government of Quebec, and a non-refundable contribution of CAD 200,000 to Investissement Québec.
Why Canada stands out:
No age or education restrictions
Excellent public services (healthcare, education)
Access to the entire North American market
Citizenship allows visa-free access to 180+ destinations

(Canva)

7/8

Australia

Australia’s National Innovation Visa (NIV) bucks the traditional golden visa model by not requiring any upfront financial investment. Instead, it targets global talent in innovation, research, technology, and the arts.
Key eligibility: Internationally recognized achievement + nomination from an approved Australian organization or agency
Top advantages:
Permanent residency with no investment requirement
High standard of living
Family inclusion (spouse and children under 23)
Flexible English and age criteria
Fast-tracked processing for applicants in key priority sectors like HealthTech, FinTech, or SpaceTech
Although it doesn’t have a big dollar figure attached, Australia’s NIV is gold-plated for innovators and change-makers seeking stability and opportunity. (Canva)

Why Golden Visas matter

In times of economic instability and geopolitical uncertainty, golden visas offer more than mobility, they offer strategic leverage. For HNWIs, these programs:

Secure an alternative safe haven
Provide a lifestyle upgrade across education, healthcare, and climate
Expand business reach in major global markets
Serve as a succession planning tool for intergenerational wealth
As more countries refine their offerings, golden visas will likely evolve beyond simple relocation tools — becoming essential assets in any smart portfolio.

Note: Always consult official immigration advisors or government sources before proceeding with any residency-by-investment program. Each country has unique eligibility, tax, and legal considerations that must be evaluated in context. (Canva)Also See:UAE opens Golden Visa to Indians with new changes: 6 things to know
