India is a country known for being home to myriad revered cities that have existed for centuries now. Among these, seven cities stand out for their immense spiritual importance and form "Sapta Puri" or the seven sacred cities. It is believed that these specific locations are deeply rooted into the spiritual fabric of Hinduism.

The Sapta Puri cities are not just your normal cities but are spiritual sanctuaries. Each city has its unique story, history, and rituals. Whether it's the Ganga Aarti in Varanasi, or the legends in Dwarka, these seven sacred cities are perfect for soul searchers.

Ayodhya – The Birthplace of Lord Ram

Set on the banks of the Sarayu River, Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, is known as the birthplace of Lord Ram. The city has gained immense faith in recent times after the construction of the iconic Ram Mandir. Today the temple stands as a spiritual center for millions of devotees. Pilgrims from all over the globe flock here to be a part of the revered rituals and understand the stories of Lord Rama.

Mathura – Abode of Lord Krishna

Lord Krishna, regarded as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is believed to have been born in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, inside one of the city’s historic prisons, now the site of the Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple. Mathura is synonymous with Krishna, with the city and its surroundings steeped in stories from the Bhagavata Purana. The streets, ghats, and temples resonate with tales of his life and exploits. Among the most celebrated festivals here are Krishna Janmashtami (Krishna’s birthday) and Holi, which is observed with great fervour.

Varanasi – The City of Lord Shiva

Varanasi or Kashi is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Set along the banks of the Ganges in Uttar Pradesh, Kashi is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The city's ghats, especially the Manikarnika Ghat and Dashashwamedh Ghat are particularly iconic. Devotees visit the ghats of Varanasi to perform last rites. It is believed that dying here ensures liberation. The ‘Ganga Arti’ here is an iconic attraction.

Ujjain – The City of Mahakal

Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh is the revered home to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The city holds utmost religious significance as it also holds the revered Kumbh Mela every 12 years. Pilgrims visit the city from across the globe to take a dip in the Shipra River during this time.

Kanchipuram – The City of Thousand Temples

Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu is noted for its ancient temples. The place is also known as the ‘City of Thousand Temples’. It is counted among the holiest cities in South India and is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The Ekambareswarar Temple and the Kamakshi Amman Temple here are globally famous. Kanchipuram is also known for its silk sarees that have secured a place internationally.

Haridwar – The Gateway to the Gods

Haridwar, meaning 'Gateway to God,' is among the seven holiest cities in Hinduism. The city in Uttarakhand is set along the sacred Ganges River. Pilgrims visit in huge numbers to take a holy dip in the Ganges. They believe that taking a dip in the holy river cleanses all sins. When here, you can’t miss the evening ‘Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri’. It is a visual spectacle.
