Explore the other wild South: Tamil Nadu’s 6 little-known wildlife sanctuaries to visit

Tamil Nadu is well known for filter coffee, temple towers, and so much more, but did you know it's also hiding some of India’s most underrated wildlife havens? Yes, beyond the touristy trail lies a wilder, quieter Tamil Nadu filled with elusive cats, snappy crocs, migrating birds, and enough wildlife that can give some of the popular national parks in the country a run for their money.
Here are six wild spots you probably haven’t heard of—but now definitely want on your bucket list.

2/7

Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (KMTR), Tirunelveli

Locals call it the 'Amazon of South India,' and maybe, they’re not exaggerating. KMTR is a dense, steamy forest where leopards, tigers, and giant squirrels can be casually spotted if you are lucky. It’s also a water source for many rivers. So yes, this place doesn’t just look good, it mesmerises.

3/7

Sathyamangalam Wildlife Sanctuary, Erode

Once Veerappan’s infamous hideout, this forest has now reclaimed its reputation as a biodiversity superstar. Nestled between the Western and Eastern Ghats, it’s a corridor for elephants, dholes, and the occasional shy tiger.

4/7

Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary, Sivaganga

Tiny but mighty, this wetland wonderland is a pitstop for thousands of migratory birds including painted storks and glossy ibises. Come winter, the sanctuary turns into a place that you would definitely want to be.

5/7

Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary, Srivilliputhur

Named after an animal that sounds like it belongs in a fantasy novel, this sanctuary protects the endangered grizzled giant squirrel—yes, that’s a real creature and it’s ridiculously cute. It’s also home to elephants, leopards, and dozens of butterfly species.

6/7

Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary, Nagapattinam

Established in 1967, the Point Calimere Sanctuary was created to protect and conserve the black antelope, an endangered species native to this region. Situated about 11 km from Vedaranyam, the sanctuary spans 17.26 sq km and features a sandy coastline bordered by saline swamps and thorny scrublands surrounding the backwaters. Its coastal environment also supports rich mangrove growth. Common wildlife sightings here include wild boar, macaques, blackbuck, and chital. The sanctuary is also home to numerous bird species such as stilts, plovers, terns, and teals, along with migratory visitors like flamingos and waterfowl.

7/7

Meghamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Theni

Tucked away in the Western Ghats, Meghamalai is all misty tea estates and moody forests, with wild elephants often casually crossing the road. Still off the radar, it’s perfect for travelers who don’t want disturbance while exploring the wild.
So why haven’t you been to these places yet? Well, it’s time that you get out of your comfort zone and explore places in the wild like never before. Tamil Nadu’s lesser-known wild side is raw, real, and refreshingly crowd-free.
