Discovering India’s 5 most colourful cities: A journey through cultural hues

India is a colourful country that glows with its diversity that can be found nowhere else in the world! From the golden sands of Rajasthan to the greenery of Kerala, hues have long been associated with India’s history, culture, and identity.
On this note, let’s have a look at five cities that stand out not just for their cultural richness, but for the colours they wear with pride. Here's a journey through India's most colourful cities:

2/6

Madurai – The City of Colours

Madurai is among the oldest living cities in the world and the most colourful cities in India. The city in Tamil Nadu is a burst of hues, both spiritual and visual. At its heart stands the Meenakshi Amman Temple, which is an architectural wonder done in thousands of colourful sculptures adorning its towering gopurams. The best part of Madurai is that the city is not defined by just one hue but by the kaleidoscope of culture it offers.

3/6

Thiruvananthapuram – The Green City

Far from the deserts of Rajasthan, Kerala’s capital Thiruvananthapuram is a city draped in green. Known as the Evergreen City of India, it thrives amidst lush hills, palm-lined beaches, and dense tropical vegetation. The city’s green reputation isn’t just literal; it's also symbolic of Kerala’s environmental consciousness and commitment to sustainable living. Thiruvananthapuram blends nature with culture.

4/6

Jaipur – The Pink City

Jaipur, The Pink City of Rajasthan, is known for its grand forts and palaces. The city was painted pink in 1876 to welcome the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). Pink was chosen as it was traditionally considered the shade of hospitality and since then, the pink never left Jaipur. Today, the whole city is awash in warm, pink hues. From Hawa Mahal to Amer Fort, the city’s architecture glows in tones of blush and rose.

5/6

Jodhpur – The Blue City

Jodhpur is only a few hours drive from Jaipur. The Blue City, Jodhpur is set on the edge of the Thar Desert and is noted for its indigo-coloured houses that cluster tightly around the imposing Mehrangarh Fort. The blue shade, originally used by Brahmins to denote their homes and keep them cool. But today, the colour dominates the old city and offers a surreal, dreamlike panorama from the fort above.

6/6

Jaisalmer – The Golden City

Jaisalmer, also known as the Golden City of India, rises from the heart of the desert like a mirage. Its nickname comes from the honey-coloured sandstone used in its buildings, especially the majestic Jaisalmer Fort, which glows golden at sunrise and sunset. The city's havelis (mansions), temples, and narrow streets all shimmer in this warm hue, lending Jaisalmer a timeless, magical quality.
