Delhi Metro Museum opens to public, plus 6 rail museums every travel buff should visit

Rail museums across the globe are a key element in preserving transport history, charting technological development and demonstrating how train networks facilitated social change.
The recent one to join the list is Delhi Metro Museum, which has been recently inaugurated at the Supreme Court Metro Station, and is now open for public to get a glimpse of India’s transport heritage in a very modern way. In a social media post, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation announced that the museum will tell the story of the journey of the Delhi Metro with guided tours and handpicked displays. These exhibits follow the history of the system, from its early stages of planning and construction to how it serves as a key spine in the daily commuting backbone at the nation’s capital.
The museum opens daily from 10 AM to 4 PM except Mondays and public holidays. At a nominal cost of INR 10 as entry fee, the museum is an experiential and participatory zone that educates commuters, students, and visitors about how the Delhi Metro revolutionised city transportation and established new standards in India for efficiency, safety, and environmental friendliness.
Here are six other rail museums from around the world that you can bookmark for a future trip.

National Railway Museum, York, England

The country's first transport museum, the National Rail Museum, offers a comprehensive archive of India’s railway history. The foundation stone was laid on October 7, 1971, by then President of India V. V. Giri, and it opened to the public on February 1, 1977, as the Rail Transport Museum. It was later renamed as the National Rail Museum in October 1995.
The museum, which sprawls over 11 acres, is themed after a railway yard. Its outdoor gallery displays an enormous variety of original life-size exhibits, including steam, diesel, and electric locomotives, royal saloons, wagons, armored trains, and rail cars. Inside, you can see interactive exhibits, models, old photographs, documents, and railway artifacts that tell the story of Indian Railways from its inception to its future ambitions. With nearly five lakh visitors every year, the museum shows how railway investment has been a key contributor to unifying and developing India as a nation.

National Railway Museum, York, England

One of the United Kingdom's premier railway museums, the National Railway Museum, is situated near York Railway Station and highlights the history of British rail and the people who shaped it. Kyoto Railway Museum, Kyoto, Japan

The ingenuity of Japan’s railways is on display at the Kyoto Railway Museum. The museum celebrates the country’s quest for speed through Shinkansen bullet trains, including early 0 Series models from the 1960s and later 500 Series trains. There is also a collection of steam locomotives from the 1920s to 1940s in a roundhouse. A rebuilt Nijō Station building offers architectural and historical context.

The museum, which dates back to the late 19th century, documents Germany's railway development from early steam engines to the modern high-speed ICE trains, while off-site collections in Halle and Koblenz support its exhibits.
