Budget-friendly destinations in 2026: 8 Indian places that should be on every traveller’s wish list this year

Travelling within India continues to be one of the smartest ways to explore diverse landscapes, cultures, and cuisines without overspending. In 2026, with rising flight costs and crowded hotspots, these eight destinations stand out for offering rich experiences on a realistic budget, especially if you’re willing to travel slowly, eat local, and stay in homestays.

2/9

Ziro Valley

Nestled in the corner of Arunachal Pradesh, Ziro Valley is perfect for travelers seeking a break from the regular Himalayan circuits. Rolling rice paddies, pine woods and the distinctive culture of the Apatani tribe make this a quietly rewarding destination. Accommodation is generally from homestays too, so it is actually quite cheap and you can get right into a culture. The food is simple, fresh and cheap, and strolling around the valley serves as a form of free entertainment.

3/9

Hampi

Hampi is still one of India’s top-value heritage spots. Even though it’s on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, daily spend is refreshingly low. Budget guesthouses, cheap bike rentals and local snacks make it easy to spend time among the sprawling ruins without breaking the bank. Read More sunrise viewpoints, riverside strolls and temple hopping no more than time and curiosity.

4/9

Majuli, Assam

The world’s largest river island provides a slow, meaningful travel experience that doesn’t place much strain on the wallet. Majuli is world famous for its satras (Vaishnavite monasteries), rural setting and cultural traditions. Accommodation is mostly homestays and eco-lodges, meals are home-cooked and what you see is free or affordable. It’s the place where simplicity gets to be a star.

5/9

Chopta

Chopta, commonly known as the base of the Tungnath trek, is significantly less expensive than most other hill stations. Budget lodges, camps and roadside dhabas have made it convenient for backpackers and nature enthusiasts. The meadows and forest trails, not to mention the mountain views, deliver crowded-out payoff for scant expenditure, particularly in periods that fall outside peak trekking seasons.

6/9

Mandawa

Mandawa serves up the Rajasthani heritage appeal without the Jaipur or Udaipur price tag. This town in the Shekhawati region is studded with painted havelis and one eye-catching fort. Budgetheritage stays and locavore eateries make it accessible, while walking tours through cobbled lanes uncover architectural details at no cost. It’s an excellent tour for a traveler who wants to learn about history, wants great photographs and it’s highly recommended.

7/9

Varkala

Varkala’s beaches along the cliff are a laid-back alternative to pricier beachfront destinations. It is a favourite among longer-staying travellers thanks to budget guesthouses, yoga stays, and cheap local fare at cafes. Swimming, sunsets and beach walks all cost nothing, while Ayurvedic treatments and yoga classes are relatively much less expensive than in the west.

8/9

Bundi

Bundi is pint-sized, atmospheric and easy on the budget (especially when compared with some of Rajasthan’s larger cities). The town’s blue houses, stepwells and views of the palace can largely be seen on foot. Lodging and food are cheap, and the lack of hustle translates to fewer tourist traps and more real moments.

9/9

Tawang

For travelers who are willing to put in the effort to organize permits and travel by road, Tawang has a lot to offer. The monasteries, high-altitude lakes, and breathtaking mountain ranges are accompanied by reasonably low daily costs once you are there. The local cuisine and basic accommodations ensure that costs remain under control, making it one of the most satisfying budget travel options in the Northeast.
